There have been jillions of atrocities against women all over the world, many much worse than what happened to the young Egyptian woman who was beaten, stomped on and nearly stripped by the military during a recent demonstration. Aside from the sheer brutality, what stood out was that she was wearing this gorgeous, sexy, bright blue bra. Under her abaya.
There was something so shocking about it, so unexpected. This person covered from head to toe demonstrated her beliefs through her choice of underwear. The blue bra said what I imagine her to be feeling: “I may be oppressed. I may not have rights. I may have to cover up my body and face. But you cannot destroy my womanhood. You can’t rob me of my femininity. You can’t take away my power.”
That blue bra, to me, was the ultimate symbol of women’s power, the one thing that threatens men above all. It makes them so crazy that over the centuries they have encoded it into their religions that women are kept down and denied the same freedoms that men have. There are very few religions where women have not been oppressed.
Men know that women’s sexuality is something they cannot live without; it is something that renders them powerless. Women can have babies, women can breastfeed, women are the lifegivers. The blue bra is a bold statement of that.
The blue bra resonated with demonstrators in Egypt. Some have replaced the eagle in the center of the Egyptian flag with a blue bra. When the incident incited a protest by women two weeks ago, the hashtag #BlueBra was used on Twitter to help organize it. More and more there are blue bra moments, not just in Egypt but around the world.
- A young woman in Egypt who was given a “virginity test” when she was arrested last March has courageously filed a criminal case against the military. This week, the Egyptian court banned virginity tests in jail.
- A woman is running for president of Egypt.
- In Israel, there have been protests after a young woman was asked to sit in the back of the bus in an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood. She refused and has become a heroine among moderate Israelis.
- In Iran, women can be arrested if they are not totally covered. Even President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, seeing the writing on the wall, is trying to promote attractive government-approved fashions for women. “Again we face a situation in which a small group will decide for all women what is allowed and what is not,” one Egyptian designer told The Washington Post.
The Egyptian woman in the blue bra has not come forward. She has been criticized for protesting in public and for not wearing more clothes under her abaya. (She was also wearing jeans.)
In a brilliant new book, “The Meaning of Mary Magdalene: Discovering the Woman at the Heart of Christianity,” author Cynthia Bourgeault argues that Mary Magdalene may well have been Jesus Christ’s lover, life companion, “soulmate” and first among apostles. This despite the fact that the official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church for almost 1,400 years was that she was a prostitute. That was finally rejected by the Vatican in 1969. “A powerful and faithful apostle is transformed into a repentant whore,” writes Bourgeault. “There is certainly more than a fair share of misogyny and slander.”
In the Gospel of Mary, in a dialogue where she is represented by “The Soul,” Mary responds to criticism from Peter: “You never truly saw nor knew me. You took the garments that I wore to be me, but you never recognized my true self.”
This plaintive cry for recognition could well be echoed by billions of women across the globe, many of them hidden under their garments. “You never recognized my true self.”
If only Mary Magdalene had had the blue bra.
It’s time for all women to own the blue bra, either a real one or one of the spirit. Let’s not allow that young woman in Egypt to have been beaten, stripped and exposed in vain. Let us make her humiliation our triumph.
A very successful friend of mine, who is often the only woman on the many medical boards she serves on, comments that everyone, herself included, wears dark suits to work, but she knows that underneath she’s also wearing pastel lace underwear. “It always gives me such a feeling of confidence and power.”
The great thing about it is that when women go into the workplace, or the public square, or anywhere else, the men are always going to wonder, does she have on the blue bra? Let the answer always be yes.
Sally Quinn is the moderator of Washingtonpost.com’s On Faith section, a conversation on religion and politics.

Jeff demonstrated perfectly, and exactly, the sentiments expressed by Sally Quinn. It is repressive speech meant to degrade Ms. Quinn, to cast aspersions that cause the reader of his comment to disregard the writer as credible and keep her in her place with abusive and labeling language. It is very typical of a certain group of citizens in this country and all over the world. It is oppressive, demeaning, stereotypical and derisive. It is also very telling about the commentator.
I agree with Sally, own the blue bra, literally and figuratively.
Namaste!
That is a brilliant photograph.
yes, it is. it tells a multi-faceted story. there is something unusual about the soldier standing over and to the right of the woman, down by her legs. I wonder who else notices…thoughts, anyone?
He is wearing sneakers, not combat boots, and he is about to stomp the woman
yep! and sneakers don’t leave heel marks like boots do. that was a conscious effort to avoid identification on the soldier’s part. the soldier appears somewhat slight–i wonder if he has ‘little man syndrome’?
If you look close, it appears that the man just in front of him has a hold of right hand of the one with the sneakers, like he was trying to push him away. (Just a thought).
Or to keep him from falling
Pertaining to the “sneaker” person, I suspect that is a woman.
I agree; look at the physiology of the left hand, the raised leg and the torso.
That’s what I thought at first, with a passing glance, but after looking again carefully, I realized it’s not a female. Yeah, he’s skinny, but so is the other soldier standing over and to the left of the woman on the ground. The skinny soldier with the sneakers has a torso that is not feminine and the thigh is not the right structure—the foot is too big for the height to be female.

I thought women were supposed to burn their bra’s?
Wow…how out of touch.
There’s a big difference between modern feminazis and feminists in foreign countries who are still fighting for what American women have already achieved.
And what is a “feminazi?”
A woman who thinks she should get the same pay as men for the same work?
A woman who doesn’t want the church or the state to decide what she does with her own body?
A woman who refuses to pop out baby after baby even if men demand she do so, and so she uses birth control?
Is it a woman who refuses to stay in a violent, abusive relationship and so leaves?
Some men are still angry because woman finally got the vote in 1920. Too many men, including the clergy of most religions, want to control all aspects of women’s lives, and get angry – like xiala 1980 if we don’t kowtow to them.
Christian, Muslim, and Judaic religions denigrate women to second-class status, putting forth the absurd notion that woman is to man as man is to God.
No wonder people are turning away from organized religions, esp. the Catholic Church (in which I was raised) with its pedophiles and very obvious bias against women.
Amazing that this is true even today in a supposedly “enlightened” age.
Hello,
I couldn’t help but notice that you lumped Islam in with Christianity, and would like to point out the error of your way. The two are in no way related, especially when you compare how women are viewed and treated. Even using “Christianity” in such broad terms is folly, since most Mormons consider themselves to be Christians and most Christians do not consider Mormons to be Christian, and again all around the table to each their own.
Jesus said, concerning women and divorce, “Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.” (Matthew 19:8 KJV). Just as with most things over time, it was out of the “hardness” of our hearts that certain unjust things happened, and divorce was only one of them.
But in God’s eyes, all are equal under the law, man or woman. A sinner is a sinner, male or female. I believe Jesus when he said “out of the hardness of your heart” – meaning my heart, and yours, and anyone who has read these words. So I treat my wife as an equal. I love and cherish her. I treat her as I would want to be treated myself.
Don’t make this about man versus woman, or else you have fallen to pride. There isn’t anything that says you can’t be proud to be a woman, and much good has come from the reversal of archaic laws based on ignorance… But don’t be bitter. Don’t take it out on people who have had nothing to do with it. And please, do not lump Islam in with Christianity. Jesus taught that we are all sinners in need of repentance, but Islam teaches that women are less than men and I have read enough of the bible and the koran to know that the two are VERY different.
Oops, I didn’t mean to start a Muslim-hating reaction by naming Islam in the same breath as Christianity and Judaism. But all three are Abrahamic based religions Muslims revere Jesus, too. Their culture is different than ours, but they love their families, too, and don’t deserve having bombs dropped on them in the name of corporate profits and control of the world’s oil.
Most Christian preachers and priests put men above women, saying it is the woman’s duty to “obey” their husbands and other men – it’s even in the marriage vows although most nowadays remove that.
Thomas Aquinas, intellectual of the Catholic Church some centuries ago, posited that woman is to man as man is to God. I remember being told that in Sunday school when I was little (admittedly a while ago).
And Orthodox Jewry treat women similar to Muslim women; Orthodox women are not considered part of the “minion” which is a minimum of people to hold religious services, and Orthodox Jewish men will not shake hands with a woman other than their wife because they might be unclean, and the women have to keep their heads and most of bodies covered, etc., etc.
Women in Catholic religions used to have to cover their heads, too, and keep most of their body covered (notice the old nuns habits) for church and the churches – virtually all of them – are run, controlled, and preached on by men. Some women have invaded this space, brave ones they are, but men prevail in most religious entities.
Muslims deny Jesus is Messiah, died, and was resurrected. You are so very wrong.
But yes, sadly a lot of the traditions, which are not biblical or ordained by God, carry on to this day which concern women. As I mentioned in my previous post, as Jesus said “out of the hardness of mans heart” were laws concerning divorce written by Moses, but from the beginning this was not so. And all other traditions concerning women, like the full body garb, are of the hardness of man’s heart.
You said, “Muslims deny Jesus is Messiah, died, and was resurrected. You are so very wrong.”
How do you know Jesus was a god? That he died? That he didn’t, as has been told, go into a sort of coma? And then in the night his friends came and let him out of the cave? And then he went around visiting friends before he left for safer places? How do you know that isn’t what happened?
Each and every little religion or division of a certain religion “knows” that theirs is the one and only true story. But they can’t all be right.
I tried alot of stuff before I became a Christian and none of it gave me any peace, something happened inside and changed my life when I accepted Christ. It’s not religion, it’s a personal relationship with God, it’s not by your works, but by what God has done. God is love 1 John 4:8
Patriarchy is a hard and fast way of believing, living, thinking. At least in this country, for the most part, one is “free” to find God in their own way. As you say, you tried alot of stuff before and found Christianity. In other countries, it’s not allowed or even tolerated to have choices. Women are treated as property, sexual divisiveness and reviled. Women are meant to be trophies and clitorized. If that is not the height of mysogyny, I don’t know what is. Why don’t men under patriarchal rule, become castrated and be an eunuch? Because the ideology of Patriarchy is that men, those that take or are in power, have to control those that are perceived as a threat…amazing how women can be a threat when the dominant gender doesn’t feel secure in their role? Choices are the threat of patriarchy and the fact this woman wore a blue bra to show her intolerance to Patriarchy is worth a Purple Heart.
Its a matter of faith, and you are free to believe whatever you like.
I never said Jesus was a god.
Jesus never died. When he said he thirst, “Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.”. “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” ( King James version John 19:29 and 19:30)
That could be the equivalent to something like chloroform used in TV or ether. In the old days many people were not totally dead, but had no reaction and an undetectable heart rate so they were buried alive, and they, his apostles did this to keep his legs from being broken. The guards did not work on Sabbath Day, so those being crucified had their legs broken so they would not run away. (19:31 and 19:32) After testing Jesus with a knife in his side to test his reaction and death, his legs were spared. (19:33 and 19:34)
Then one of his apostles made sure he wrapped Jesus. (19:38) Then took him in a sepulchre where no man was yet laid. (19:40 19:41) I’ll bet so Jesus could get out when he woke up.
Jesus never died.
One man’s magic is another man’s science.
Vinegar is vinegar and hyssop is a bitter herb. It was meant to taunt . If you are thirsty woukld you like a sip of vinegar and bitter herbs? Nothing to do with chloroform
You really think someone could survive a flaying of flesh before being crucified and then stabbed in the lungs? The blood loss alone should have killed him, if not infection, dehydration and exposure in such a state. But I suppose science isn’t your best bet, just stick to magic “chloroform” made of vinegar and hyssop.
People use that verse (Wives obey your husbands…Ephesians 5:22) as an argument that Christian men are placed above women and they stop there. Unfortunately, some men also use that verse to gain control and status above women, but whenever that verse is used the rest of the passage manages to get omitted. If you’re to continue reading just a bit further, the rest states…”And Husbands, love your wives just as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her….Husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies.” Men are called to sacrifice themselves (not necessarily in physical death) for their wives and to treat and love their wives as themselves. It’s unfortunate that Bible verses are used out of context to further somebody’s agenda.
abortion is not the decision of what you do with your own body, it is murdering another human being, that is not your body, it is a body within your body, please educate yourself on abortion by watching the silent scream http://www.silentscream.org/video1.htm Also planned parenthood was started by a racist with the intent of controlling the black population
yes, let’s all go back to the good ole days of women being butchered in motel rooms while unscrupulous doctors hack out their insides.
a good clean abortion only butchers the baby, cuts their body up into pieces before suctioning the pieces out, first burn their skin off with saline or how about partial birth abortion, letting the baby be partially born then puncturing the back of the baby’s skull and sucking the brains out, that doesn’t hurt, at least not you.
freedom of choice doesn’t mean ‘support abortion”; it means ‘provide access to women’s reproductive health care’ so that women can have a safe alternative to throwing themselves down the stairs or attempting self-abortions, which is what was going on before Roe v. Wade.
I’m not for outlawing abortion, I’m for educating and showing a woman an abortion that has been performed, what the doctor does to the baby when they kill the baby, then see if the woman will choose abortion, I mean shouldn’t a woman be educated and shown the truth of what an abortion is if she is to make an educated decision.
and i am here to remind you, and those with your opinion, that reproductive rights are a basic human right for women.
i also think it is arrogant of you to assume women are ignorant of the consequences of the choice they are about to make. it is a personal, family choice and not up to strangers or legislators to decide.
how about educating our young so they don’t get pregnant in the first place? Making birth control cheap and accessible to all that need and want it?
Guess what? Most will still go through with the abortion. It does not work as often as you may believe it will to change someone’s mind.
Do you just go looking for places to perpetrate your belief? How does this have anything to do with the story written?
Oh, Goody, now I’m in threads on politics, religion and abortion. No one wins those discussions.
The way to cut back on the number of abortions, if that is your quest, is to come up with a truly safe and effective means of birth control for women, and make that birth control freely available to all women. Then you’d see virtually no abortions.
Next, let’s discuss children and parenting. ;)
Oh my gawd, you need to be re-educated.
Did you read my whole comment or did you completely lose your mind when you saw the term “feminazi”?
I am compelled to first address your hasty assumption that I am a man. After all, I’m speaking out against a certain group of women whom I have referred to by using a harsh term, so I must be a chauvinist man. I am, in fact, a woman who happens to be well educated on the topic of the feminist movement.
Since you seem to be either confused or emotionally shaken over the term “feminazi,” let me explain what it means. When I use the term, I am referring to the types of feminists who: 1) hate all men indiscriminately and 2) whine for the sake of whining. Certainly the Suffragettes in the early 20th century were anything but feminazis, as they were fighting for a real purpose. I am also well aware of the struggles they faced: imprisonment, torture, starvation, rape, humiliation. The difference between the two is night and day. The feminazi belief that all men, as a collective, are evil is in and of itself a good reason for using the term. Feminazis are the KKK of the female population. Get it?
We have come so far here in the United States since then. There may still be a few cases of discrimination against women in the workplace but aside from that, we have it pretty well.
There are countries where women don’t have the rights that American women have; many middle eastern countries, for example. If they were to come here and see what freedom the women here have, they would think it was a utopia. There are so many people here in the U.S. complaining about how they don’t have this and they don’t have that. My advice to them is to walk in the shoes of a Saudi woman for a while — or better yet, an Afghan woman. They’ll come back here, kiss the ground and thank God every day for their freedom.
Have a nice day.
As unpopular as the wars in the Middle East are, this is one of the very things that we’re fighting for; the right of ALL people to be treated with dignity. NO ONE should be treated this way, particularly an unarmed non-combatant.
Keep this point in mind next time someone tries to defend the ‘Cultural Values’ of Islam; you are seeing their cultural values at work…
Have you heard the violence committed against OWS protesters? Kind of the same thing. This isn’t Cultural values. It people abusing there power.
These “cultural values” are only shared by the relatively few radical proponents of Islam.
Interestingly, very similar values are held by some Christians, but they aren’t being demonized and bombed.
really, cause when I went to Baltimore Maryland we were on our way out of the city and passed a mosque, there were about 6 huge men standing out front like they were guarding the joint, had their arms crossed, I’ve never been to a Christian church like that, bet you don’t stroll your way into a mosque. Islam wants to take over this country, don’t fool yourself, you are an infidel in their eyes
What do you say about the good Christian values that dragged protesters through the streets of Oakland the same way?
Christians did that? From what religion, cause you got your basic Catholic, Mormon, Baptist, alot of these people go to church but they are not Christian, definitely not Mormons, they follow Joseph Smith , not Jesus.
Christians did that because they ARE Christians?
Is that what we were fighting for at Sand Creek and Wounded Knee as well? My Lai and Haditha? We have openly endorsed this new Egyptian regime (as we did the old one). How can this be a rallying cry for our foreign wars, which inevitably create situations where our own soldiers become guilty of the same transgressions this photographer captured?
Like woman have more rights in Iraq now . Not…………………………….
islam sucks.
Nah, I think its tyrannical religious zealots that suck. Luckily we don’t have leaders here who insist we follow the bible to a “t”. If so, we’d all be getting stomped like this poor woman.
actually Jesus preached forgiveness, it was the pharisees who were intolerant, the Bible also says a man should lay down his life for his wife, love for every person is unselfish, does not demand its own way, the kind of love we are to have
And Moses’s law states not to oppress anyone. Maybe if people followed the bible to a “t”, we’d share more, have more liberties, equality, freedom, and respect?
Nope, we would all be force to go to church, only a man and women would be able to get married and we would shun all those you are not Christians. I wish what you said was what he hard religous followers in the USA preached but they don’t.
We need to keep in mind that Islam is not ‘just’ a religion; it is a complete way of life. All phases of existence are prescribed, including how people are to be governed (and “democracy” is not on the list, as they say). Attitudes toward women, and statements as to the value of women are written in stone, and are not up for debate. A Moslem may not question or debate the tenets of his religion.
Yes they can. They can adapot it to todays society. What you are talking about is the hardcore followers. Just like in any religion people adapt to todays norms.
Read this: http://wikiislam.net/wiki/Islamic_Law
Yes and your point? Do christians follow the bible to a t? No, Do my muslim friends follow the koran to a T? No
Not at all..stereotyping does.
“the one thing that threatens men above all. It makes them so crazy…..” Good job lumping all men into one stereotype of being violent, abusive, repressive, rapist-minded neanderthals who seek to quash women without pause. While we’re at it why don’t we make some generalizations about blacks, whites, gays, Asians, or Jews? Well no matter, I’m sure that the Yong thoughtful Arab rebels who started these revolts against their horrible leaders will have some new-found liberal freedoms when it’s all over…. oops, here comes the Muslim brotherhood, and now you’re worse off than before. Good job youthful tweeting rebel facebookers. You screwed yourselves.
Not what she did.
“That blue bra, to me, was the ultimate symbol of women’s power, the one thing that threatens men above all. It makes them so crazy that over the centuries they have encoded it into their religions that women are kept down and denied the same freedoms that men have. There are very few religions where women have not been oppressed.” wow Sally……….really? What a huge sterotype and such a wide broom you sweep with. Why don’t you just say all men are evil?
Agreed. I was brought up to respect women. My father always treated my mother as an equal. In fact, my mother set the rules, my father enforced them. Not every man is a knuckle dragging, hairy backed, woman beater. Some of us love our wives, and would die for them without batting an eyelash. When my wife went through cancer and needed blood, I went in and donated blood because we are the same type. The blood she received was mine, because she is my wife, my equal, and my partner on this ride called life. I love her with all my heart and soul.
she’s a lucky gal
Not ever man is, but not ever man isn’t either. Your wife is a lucky man, and I’m a lucky wife myself, but for every one of us there are 10 out there with a knuckle-dragger.
–Oh Please ; just because of your need to include a few low life males in your sphere of influence speaks more to a personal problem –; your man bashing comments have no basis in fact.
Really, how come women had to struggle so hard just to vote in the USA?
Oh please, back. I have had many friends, aquaintances and co-workers over the years with opressive, steryotypical male partners. I know there are a lot of good men out there but there are a TON who aren’t. I’m going to assume you are a man for getting so defensive. ;)
—””””Stereotypical male partners”””” !!! –prejudicial much !!!!! –: and ‘if’ I were to say that stereotypical woman was —nagging, overweight, lazy and self serving [ and those were the good things ] –because have ”friends, acquaintances and co-workers” to justify such a comment –would you ‘might’ think I was a ”bit” self serving/prejudicial —and may I assume you are of the feminine gender :)
Lucky lady. We aren’t all that lucky….
your wife is a lucky women
The worst thing is how naive a view of gender and power this conveys. It makes equal sense saying that men are inherently threatened by women’s power as it does to say that women are inherently subservient. It’s too bad such an interesting story got dragged through such a stereotyped perspective.
The comment is historically correct. It is hard to find a religion where women have not been oppressed, including Christianity. All one needs to do is read the Bible. Men, for centuries kept women down and did deny them the same freedoms, and perhaps not so much now, but there are still many countries that still do.
Except Moses’ law states not to oppress anyone…
in the Bible, women are considered property. Considered worth less than males from the time of birth. Sold to their rapists, forced to marry. There are many, many passages in the Bible about women, their inferiority, and how they should be dealt with….whether they’re sold to their attackers, stoned to death for not being able to prove their virginity or put to death for what ever reason. Even in the 10 Commandments, the verse “thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife” and includes her with thy neighbor’s property.
The interesting thing is that men are not evil, yet, how many women do we have making decisions in society? That balance is what keeps us human. How can humanity turn their backs that people are hungry, that people have to pay bills, before eating? That we consider weapons and war in protecting life when life has not truly been protected through sustaining life! Without that balance, the real representation of humanity will never serve the people. Without that nurturing, humanity is Lost! I have felt that persecution standing up, as a woman, I understand! Men are not evil, but without that female balance and input, where are we going? Without that input, evil does occur! As a society we have to recognize the truth of that.
Blue bras have some sort of feminist significance?? What file did that thought get pulled out of?
The point of the article is that even though she was made to cover her whole body in public, they couldn’t stop her from wearing a sexy bra underneath it all.
It looks like a plain blue bra to me. I think if it was white, some of you would think “sexy and sneaky” of her.
did this woman give consent for her picture to be shown all over the world? just wondering. Seems like the very thing she is oppressing may also be reinforced by this photo.
That is a still taken from a video and the video has already been seen around the world.
“That blue bra, to me, was the ultimate symbol of women’s power, the one thing that threatens men above all. It makes them so crazy that over the centuries they have encoded it into their religions that women are kept down and denied the same freedoms that men have.”
How does stereo-typing and vilifying men help things?
“How does stereo-typing and vilifying men help things? ”
That is a fair question, even if not politically correct.
If the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world, when are woman,
who are more that half of all humanity, going to take their share of the responsibility
… and then do more than just whine about how the world is not fair ?
After you, m’am ?
When the men that do what they do stop using their advantage of physical strength to control women. How can you make this statement when there are countries that stone their women to death? How about the Muslim women who, despite being dressed head to toe in a khimar and is minding her own business, gets beaten in the street because a man ‘checked her out’? (yes, a military family member saw this). How about the fact that women and young girls are forced into porn and prostitution with threats and acts of violence? Do men have to worry about being attacked and possibly raped if they walk alone somewhere remote? Should all these women just stop whining about how unfair their lives are? How about the abusers take a stand and take their share of the responsibility? You, and others who voice your same sentiments, just show how ignorant you are to the injustices of the world. But I guess it’s not surprising that the gender of those who are the problem are the ones complaining about being stereotyped.
Not “men”, but agents of State … rectionary, religious authoritarians… did that to the blue bra gal .
”
How about the fact that women and young girls are forced into porn and prostitution with threats and acts of violence? ”
No boys… ever ?
Do child soldiers count ?
” How about the abusers take a stand and take their share of the responsibility?”
Tell them, not ALL MEN.
If that doesn’t work, more dead abusers and less passive victims might help.
Have you ever considered that ?
Oh please! Look at the prison systems! There are FIFTEEN times more men than women. Yes, males are forced into prostitution, too, but who’s taking the most advantage of them both as pimps and johns? Again, men. There are female agents of the state, too-but you usually hear about the men. I personally have never heard of a child-molesting nun! And yes, ALL MEN have a responsibility as a group to stand up for what isn’t right. Gang rape? Again, usually a group of men. You get a portion of individuals in a group who stand up against something, and it’s amazing the power they can hold to prevent something from happening. When something is accepted or overlooked, it’s seen as ‘normal’ or ‘ok’. About the Muslim woman, do you think if some other guards came rushing over and asked them what the hell they were doing, it would have necessarily gotten that far? There’s a slim chance, yes, but probably not. Men (looking at the big picture here!) need to realize they are the majority of the problem when it comes to women’s unequal rights, just as I’ve come to the realization that I need to teach my children extra carefully about how you properly treat your significant other, and teach my daughters to walk in groups and not put themselves into unsafe situations (not too worried about them being jumped in an empty parking lot by a woman). I’m sorry it sucks to be a man and be targeted, but those are the facts. Continue to be the good man you say you are, and try to spread some of those good-intentions and morals to other men that you know.
Since it is said that men seek power and money to please women, when women are educated enough to know that fact and care and sacrifice the material gains without question, and when our representatives in politics are balanced, if not with women directly, with women advisers.
All men are woman’s children.
So if: ” men seek power and money to please women”
And : “If the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world”
Get busy.
Otherwise when will women be “educated enough to know that fact and care and sacrifice the material gains without question” and when will “our representatives in politics” be “balanced, if not with women directly, with women advisers” ?
You have the power, why is it not being used more creatively and more publicly ?
What’s new , have you decided that yet? ?
I know better than to suggest solutions to women when they just want to express their feelings, first,
but I’m looking forward to hearing what the women’s new solution might be.
I wonder where the focus will be, in hopes of supporting them,
once you all decide and all agree upon how you all should feel about ….
er… ahhh … oh, may-be … like, is it just everything, all at once, now, still isn’t it ?
The reason women don’t exercise our voices and demand power equal to our numbers is because when we do there is a price to pay. We are called unsavory, gender based names and routinely our contributions are dismissed, or exaggerated, based on how we look, what we wear and whether we act demurely. This message is reflected in our culture everywhere we look. It pits us against one another.
Sometimes the result of exercising our liberty is experiencing violence. This is a reality that women have to live with everyday….the possibility that we could be harmed by someone, usually a man, for having the audacity to walk down a city street alone or for some women, insist on equal power in our homes.
It’s no wonder that women rarely publicly organize to change the conditions that we live in. The very thread of society tells us it’s risky to challenge power.
It’s not vilifying men’s behaviors, it’s vilifying Patriarchy. Partriarchial ideology is as old as Christianity if not older. Another poster was right, women were/are treated as property. Rape and pilage, sound familiar? Patriarchy is the idea to treat people differently then what you, the one in power, judge. Read the Burning Times, thousands of women were slaughtered during the time of Christianity taking over Europe. Then, to make sure women stay compliant, men would be afraid of a potential wife, to be assertive and domestic violence….read history, you will notice patterns and similarities between slaughtering of people and the Patriarchy.
I would never argue that bad things do not and have not happened to women at the hands of men. I am well acquainted with history as well as current events.
My issue is more with the broad-sweeping Lifetime Movie Network generalization that all men are evil. There are really horrible people out there, men and women alike. But not all men beat their wives/girlfriends, treat them as though they are subservient, etc.
Nothing ever got resolved through painting a large group of people with the same brush.
Who says painting with the same brush? Patriarchy deals with whomever is in control, be it men or women and the abuse of that control. This isn’t a movie network, this is life. Generalizations fall under the category of Patriarchal control. If you generalize, dehumanize, then those that are in control stays in control. Right now, following your reasoning, not sarcastically, the media is in control by dehumanizing those they perceive as a threat. Not everyone is a demon and not everyone is a saint, humanity, for the most part fall in the middle of a continuum. The fringes, ironically, are the ones that are in control, whether in this country or other countries.
” It’s not vilifying men’s behaviors ” to speak as if all men are the same ?
Okay, if you say so.
But is that sexist if, and when, girls do it, too, or not so much so,
for some reason that men just can’t understand ?
; 0
But look, how about if you were to speak of “authoritarianism” instead of “Patriarchy” … as you use it in saying : “Partriarchial ideology is as old as Christianity if not older. ..”,
then restate your points so that they sound inclusive of all good humane people who are willing to question authority and then change the established, but repressive, norms ?
Would that be not being pro-active and less divisive, along gender line, at least,
so the being opposite of the “partriarchial ideology” , may-be ?
I feel like that kind of thinking … being the opposite of what is wrong… might help, don’t you ?
It might even be kind of the point of what you might be saying, above, I might guess.
Why quibble with semantics? Yes, authoritarianism is no doubt the rule but the patriarchal ideology is more then the rule. Who can kill an idea? Patriarchal is more then a form of rule. It’s an idea that those with more money, class, power deserves to rule with no consequence to those that are considered “less than”. That idea of controling others is older than civilizations. So, I agree that we need another ideology and a way of balancing power, guess that comes to this country with the idea of Republic and “democracy”. I guess that is the best form of government that can offer a different idea than Patriarchal or authoritanism rule. But look who is being victimized…people with different color skin, women of all color, old people and children. All of these folks are not in power so therefore victimized by the idea of Patriarchy. One breath of fresh air, read that a Black church was able to retain ownership of a KKK shop.!!! That is long overdue!!!;>)
Why quibble with semantics? ”
Conscientiousness raising, Honey Buns ?
See words have meaning and do effect the point.
It cuts both ways, doesn’t it ?
“Patriarchal is more then a form of rule. It’s an idea that those with more money, class, power deserves to rule with no consequence to those that are considered “less than”. That idea of controling others is older than civilizations.”
So is authoritarianism, AND women are part of that too.
The reality is women a play a rule in supporting your “patriarchal rule” , too.
But I worry that saying that truth would just tilt some people’s minds,
so, again, suggest the non-gender biased word.
What are your objections to being more inclusive ?
I have no objections to being more inclusive in displaying the fact that yes, women play a role in patriarchy society as well. Just ask the makeup companies, the gym companies, the fashion industries and least of all, the other women that feel that they’re in direct competition with women for the attentions of men…The whole country of corporations are making money on one idea of patriarchy. Why do women and now men have to use makeup, have the latest fashions, latest hair coloring the latest everything. To look more towards and imitate the upper echelon to be a part of something that is not even real. Capitalism is based on Patriarchy ideas and keying on those people that consider themselves “less than” the ones that are in control. That is why the Blue-Bra is a symbol that on the outside, might have to conform to the standards of that country, but underneath, she can be her own person. Women and men that feel that they have to compete to get a scrap from the masters table should take pride in the fact that this one woman would dare to be different and wear a Blue-Bra. If only people could be valued for being themselves and not have to feel the need and ordered to conform to the ruling parties. Imagine the world then? Star Trek would become a reality ;0)
I hear you.
And my point is so simple as be embarrassing.
It is just just that if the arm that rocks the cradle rules the world,
do not ask me “Why do women wear make up…”, instead start there,
and ask your children or grandchildren why they think woman must wear make up
…. then if that goes well, make them think about “Capitalism is based on Patriarchy ”
… or as I prefer to say it, being as good a father as I can be … authoritarianism,
before they are sucked in to it.
Teach them what you think and I agree they should know…
to trust love, but but to question authority, earlier than you and I learned it.
It is just us making the world better.
Then tell them that …
No … RAISE them to know that we hope they continue to do so, too.
That, not a blue bra, is the real power of a woman.
Wow !! Remember how wonderful “Democracy in Egypt” was supposed to be ?? Obama’s ‘New Egypt’, we were told, was ground zero for the “Arab Spring” – an uprising of people wanting to be free. Kind of looks like Sharia Law, to me. Oh, wait. It is Sharia Law courtesy of those wonderful Muslim Brotherhood fellas. Liberals/Marxists/Socialists have such wonderful ‘vision’ for the world.

Ummmm……It’s been Egypt’s millitary that’s been in charge since Mubarak’s ouster.
Yes, Egypt is starting to have elections, but there hasnt been a handover of power to a civilian government.
marxism has nothing to do with Sharia Law….what connection are you trying to make?
‘Obama’s Egypt’?? what does that mean? Obama didn’t do anything re: the Arab Spring, as if he was supposed to.
Egypt still has a very long way to go. The Islamists will be in power next, and will act no differently than Mubarak’s gang did. The people will have to rise up again, and maybe again after that, if they want democracy. The very concept of democracy is anathema to Sharia, and that seems to be the “system” they all want to put into place. Chopped off hands and stoning, anyone…?
Its not the Islamist that are in power, its the military regime. Please educate yourself.
Please, Please educate yourself. Its not Sharia law. The military regime is still in power. Please go read before making yourself look really bad. You just demostrated that you know nothing of anything. They are still struggling for freedom over there. They took down Mubarak, now they need to take down the military power.
So much mis-information. To the nay-sayers . . . Find out who’s REALLY in control, over there. Then explore their STATED goals / beliefs and things will start to make sense. BTW, the Bamster wholly endorsed the overthrow of Mubarak. He owns the results whether CNN and NBC cover it that way, or not. This is Liberal/Marxist/Socialist foreign policy in action.
It was a well written article with a very powerful message until the very end when she includes a friend of hers who works on a medical board. Now it becomes sexist and not about empowerment.
From the artice:
“””herself included, wears dark suits to work, but she knows that underneath she’s also wearing pastel lace underwear.”””
And I’m sure at least one of the guys has them on as well. She just doesn’t know it.
LOL
But I really mean it. A lot of straight men love to wear women undies. It is something one can Google if you think I’m not being serious.
there was a famous actor back in the day, his name escapes me but he liked to wear women’s dresses, his current girlfriend when she found out his fetish gave him some fashion advice, don’t wear polka dot dresses, they just didn’t do a thing for him.
I don’t need to google, I read Vogue and Elle, LOL
This is a ridiculous article. Don’t lump Islam in with Judaism and Christianity when you think of religions, and treat everyone as an individual regardless of what faith they profess. I have a sneaking suspicion that by just invoking the religious aspect of this into the dialogue, one would assume that all religions are the same. If that were the case, there wouldn’t be so many religions. That’s like saying all food is the same, because everyone (like me) loves anchovies on their pizza, right?
God treats all, men and women, as equals. To even insinuate otherwise is totally ludicrous. Granted, based on the obvious gender differences we have different abilities since men can not give birth, but these differences do not make one better than the other. These differences are only the result of living in an imperfect world.
Oh and Cynthia Bourgeault was wrong. Jesus had no “lover”, male or female. Jesus was the perfect passover sacrifice; unblemished. The one-and-for-all sin offering that Jesus made of his own free will couldn’t be possible if he had given in to carnal urges and submitted to sin.
He doesn’t treat everyone equal. He hates gays! Boom Roasted!
Homosexuals are equal under the law as well, and have salvation in Jesus the Messiah just the same as anyone else.
Stripping and stomping an unarmed woman in the street.
Is that what SHARIA LAW is about ??
No thanks, I dont want it.
Im not sure if that’s what Sharia law or Islam is about…..
It looks more like what authoritarianism and police brutality is about….
and that transcends multiple religions and secularism alike.
So what is SHARIA LAW about , if not the subjugation
and violation of women ?
Religion as politics … a theocracy, so the subjugation and violation of the men, too ?
Your whole Sharia Law angle is a red herring.
The people stomping on this woman is the Egyptian millitary, not Islamic fundamentalists!
The Egyptian Millitary are the ones running Egypt since Pres. Mubarak’s ouster, not the Muslim Brotherhood. These protesters are protesting because they have lived under a military authoritarian regime for decades and they want freedom! These soldiers are stomping on these protesters because the Military doesnt want to lose control of the country and their strangle hold on the economy!
And Egypt is not currently and has not been for some time ruled under Sharia Law!
the writer herself is insinuating Islam by saying she was wearing that bra under an abaya because that particular garment is worn by women in Islam, as a matter of fact this article is attacking religion and saying it is used to keep women down, not very good reporting of fact but more emotionally based, why were they beating that woman, it never really explains what was going on just uses her as some sort of pariah against religion
“why were they beating that woman, it never really explains…..”
She is a part of the large scale protests going on right now in Eypt that want an end to Military rule and move towards democracy and citizen run government.
http://www.npr.org/blogs/pictureshow/2011/12/21/144098384/the-girl-in-the-blue-bra
The people of Eygpt may have removed Mubarak, but the corrupt system that kept Mubarak in power over the decades remains.
Give me a break. NOT everything is about religion. It just isn’t.
Oh and if you wish to utilize the line that The King James Bible is the true word of God, I have news for you. It was not translated from the Greek, Aramaic or Ugaritic texts in it’s entirety. Also, much was added by King James himself. He was a gay man and did not wish his subjects to know he was as such. His children were sired by his brother.
One more point. The language has changed since the KJ version was written so much so that to ask if I know you, means did I have sex with you? Hmmm, the exact word of God, huh?
P.S. In my opinion, whenever someone tells me their way is the only way to God, I walk away. The ego muddles too much and ruins the soul intent. NO ONE is ever correct on the ONLY path to God.
OK, I got it.
Military ruler : Bad.
Sharia Law : Good.
No, you dont got what Im saying. I am not advocating Sharia Law.
I am advocating democracy, good governance, religious freedom etc.
I would not advocate the force of people to live under Sharia Law anymore than I would want to force people to live under the Ten Commandments.
Does human rights abuses /atrocities occur due to religious fundamentalism? Yes. But it would be foolish to believe Islam has a monopoly on the market.
That is why it is important to have a separation of church and state, religious freedom, citizen run governments, democracy, checks and balances, etc.
I dont know how much clearer I can be with you.
If you cant comprehend what Im trying to say at this point,
feel free to snip it somewhere else.
I love how people make fun of sharia law, but them most of these same people what use to follow christian law
A “Christian law” would mean that we follow Jesus’ laws, since he is Christ (anointed).
So you think caring for people who can’t care for themselves, forgiveness, love, and treating others as you would want to be treated… Is a bad thing?
I see.
But that is not what people want. Many christians that are on the right don’t want to help anyone put the own pockets in the form of lower taxes.
Well, it is about the subjugation and violation of EVERYONE, but the guys usually don’t ‘get it’ until it is too late to opt out. Islam means “Submission”.
When you think of all the US Military Industrial complex personnel who wind up working
in the Bangor Police Department, Sheriff’s office and the Maine State Police
then you can understand the connection between sociopaths and their behaviour.
Did I mention the FBI?
Do you really expect the Bangor hack Caine to provide leadership,eh?

http://www.putthatshitonthelist.com/2011/11/brave-seattle-cops-pepper-spray-your.html
I know I’m going to catch hell from you folks not knowing how to spell “Sha-re-ah” law. I would bet we will all know how to spell it soon, its coming and coming fast!
Did Glen Beck tell you that??
There are threats by certain groups to introduce Shariah law. Just how successful they become is much too early to predict. Always, I would say, if we as citizen want to protect our republic, being vigilant is a very important task Americans should take seriously.
This picture’s worth a thousand words, I was expecting a much better article. The point’s been made about the feminist thing already, I won’t beat a dead horse. I do have to say that beginning an article with a picture as powerful as that and then writing “jillions” in the first sentence is just disgraceful. Can we at least use adult language?
Sally Quinn: One sort of ugliness does not justify another. Contempt for men really isn’t helpful.
Unfortunately people often generalize behaviors. Just because one has experienced problems with a member of the opposite gender doesn’t mean all gender members are the same. Generalizations of this sort often reflect an inability to understand the opposite $ ex in general.
I wonder to myself why it had to be insinuated that Mary Magdalene was Jesus’ lover, we are talking about liberation here right? Let’s not forget it was the men in this country who stood behind the women by passing the 19th amendment to the constitution that said “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” I’ll tell you what, that crap they pull overseas will not be tolerated in this country, women have rights here, we are not subservient to men, but it also means we don’t have to tear men down and make them less, we are equal.
If you gave this enough thought you might have connected the dots.
Another name for police officers is centurion.
You understand it was a Centurion who pieced the side of Christ and killed him?
what does that have to do with my comment
Nothing probably, yet in so many ways it does.
In the news we often see police officers over-reacting in public demonstrations. Police however perform a very valuable function of protecting citizens in civil societies like ours. What we see in the news is usually not balanced. Crimes and misdeeds get good coverage. Yet rarely do we see good works getting the coverage it deserves. Regrettably, keeping violent and threatening mobs at bay is a good deed that all too often goes unappreciated in critical society.
The History Channel made a 9 part series about the Assassination of President Kennedy.
The last show in the series was called THE GUILTY MEN.
It details the evidence for President Kennedy being assassinated by the FBI.
After becoming the most popular show in the series the History Channel pulled it off the air and refuse to sell it.

In 1999 the Martin Luther King family sued one of the assassins of Martin Luther King in civil court. They did this because the department of justice would not reopen the investigation after the Martin Luther King family uncovered evidence that the FBI, CIA, and Memphis police had assassinated Dr King. The King family also wanted to enter their evidence into a public record so it could be accessed. The jury returned a verdict in favor of the King family and juror members held a press conference saying it was a clear cut case of the FBI assassinating Dr King. There was a media blackout of the trial. Details of the trial can be viewed here or by reading the book called ACT OF STATE THE EXECUTION OF Martin Luther King
written by the trial attorney William Pepper.

CNN exclusive: FBI misconduct reveals sex, lies and videotape
By Scott Zamost and Kyra Phillips, CNN Special Investigations Unit
January 27, 2011
Washington (CNN) — An FBI employee shared confidential information with his girlfriend, who was a news reporter, then later threatened to release a sex tape the two had made.
A supervisor watched pornographic videos in his office during work hours while “satisfying himself.”
And an employee in a “leadership position” misused a government database to check on two friends who were exotic dancers and allowed them into an FBI office after hours.
These are among confidential summaries of FBI disciplinary reports obtained by CNN, which describe misconduct by agency supervisors, agents and other employees over the last three years.
Read the FBI documents obtained by CNN
Thank-you for your vital information…just proves that those that are in power can control everything that you see, read and hear. Patriarchy alive and well. Imagine FBI following John Lennon around the biggest threat to National Security, his music…WOW! Can’t make this stuff up, it’s too weird.
Feminist like to cease on the so-called gospel of Mary because in many ways in contradicts the more traditional gospels found in the canon of most Christian churches. Just as we see today, there was a cultural war in the era of the early Christian church. Naturally, those opposed to Christianity wrote their own “gospels” to compete with the emerging Christian message, sometimes referred to as “The Good News”.
Maybe I will paint my fingernails blue to show my support and yes, I know to use a clear coat first so my nails don’t become stained.
Of course a guy walking around with pretty blue fingers will get noticed but then again you will be amazed at what people miss.
I could wear a blue bra but that would freak a lot more people out than pretty blue fingers but maybe we can get other men to paint their fingers to show their support.
So will I paint them? We shall see. I’m secure enough in my sexually to do it, wonder if other men are.
you’re a regular comedian
Why is that?
why is it that you’re a regular comedian or that the blue bra and fingernails won’t get you noticed in NYC
The answer is simple. In general most men don’t pay attention to what a person wears nearly as much as women do. In NYC, residents are so used to seeing exhibitionists they pay them little heed. I suppose that phenomenon applies in other larger cities as well. In contrast, exhibitionists will probably get a thumbs down in Smalltown, USA.
you are right, I am from Maine and I went and lived in NYC for awhile, you see alot down there you would probably not see up here especially in Bangor, Maine, they are so conservative up north they don’t even put up Dem posters during the presidential election, at least I didn’t see any during the 2004 election process when I happened to go to Bangor.
are you on FB or twitter
Yes, I am both I will never tell you either of my accounts. Nothing personal towards you it is just how I roll.
cool
actually if you wore that blue bra and painted fingernails in NYC nobody would give you a second look, that’s regular fare down there
Men and women, because of the physical, mental, and emotional states owing to their gender, express themselves differently. Don’t expect men in our culture to paint their finger nails blue unless they’re doing it to make a political statement. If one wants to feel secure, one should start thinking a little less about self and more about others. Try it, it works.
You are are weird person.
Sir, please check out the rules for posting. It clearly stated that name calling is not permitted. If you can’t help yourself, then you should withdraw from this forum for public discussion.
Weird and amusing. Thanks for the laugh.
Yes, I agree with you. We are equal in dignity and in our humanity. But we are different in a lot of ways: physically, mentally, and emotionally. These distinctions are very important. The more we understand these the better we can complement each other. Thus each gender plays an important role, just like every part of our body does to complete the whole.
She was his lover.
No, she was not. Jesus had no “lover” (sexual partner).
Jesus didn’t come here to take a lover, you don’t even know what you’re talking about, you’re thinking on a soulish level, He came for one purpose only and He fulfilled His purpose here on earth, sex is not the be all, end all and anyone who thinks that it is is a fool
Women got the right to vote because the suffragate had the president over a barrel with the WWI. The propositioned them that if they would vote on the amendment, then they would push the war effort. Then the women pushed for prohibition. Both amendments were voted through. If in this country, all people were equal in the beginning, then we wouldn’t have had a Civil war, because the slaves would have had the right to vote, but even then, they were only considered 1/5 a person. So, see the patriarchal ideology is alive and well. Wasn’t until the last century that the blacks had equal rights, only after how many murders, burnings and demonstrations. Amazing what demonstrations can do. The woman in the Blue-bra knew the meaning of demonstrations and was willing to pay the ultimate price, death, for something that she believes in. Now, in the news about the cuts to MaineCare, the republicans are not backing LePage about the cuts, don’t suppose because of alot of demonstrations and pulling strings and using power has stopped the atrocity? Look around you and see with no rose colored glasses and see the world the way it really is. No one lives like Jesus did or preaches, only when it’s convenient. The ones that do, are not in the spot light but lives quietly behind the scenes. Those folks are the true Christians. They don’t preach but live their lives, helping others, and maybe not so Christian but something older than Christianity…:0)
I’m sorry but this article is a load of crap, a true protest would not have been that blue bra it would have been doffing that abaya, doing that would have been an in your face take your crap you’re not going to oppress me any more by forcing me to cover myself. Sally Quinn is simply using this woman and the beating she got to attack religion, period. She’s no better than the people who beat her.
If the young lady had tried that, she would be dead now. DEAD.
look like her protesting didn’t get her very far, how do you know that she isn’t dead
Think, again.

Brave Seattle cops pepper spray your grandmother in the face
http://www.putthatshitonthelist.com/2011/11/brave-seattle-cops-pepper-spray-your.html
Even more than the blue bra and jeans, my focus is on the a man’s big foot about to stomp down on a woman’s mid-section, blue bra or not. Three helmeted monsters with one woman on the ground, and they still have hands on her, and in a split second, a big foot. And her face still covered with the burqa. Those guys molesting that woman are cowards who later I would bet went out, got drunk, and went home and beat whatever women were in their ninth century domicile. I won’t even comment on Sally Quinn’s story. A rehash of a rehash of a rehash. The contrast between her story and the photo is obscene. This is the 21st century and men abuse women all over the world. I think here it’s called “domestic violence.” Sally, your anemic blah blah won’t change a thing. I bet the women who got beat up that night didn’t have Twitter.
Islam needs to put their “men” in burkas and their women in bikinis and corvettes. The men can clean the toilets and cook something. The women can cruise The beaches of the World.
I know I don’t understand their ways but the men seem to have an obession about sex to a manic level and yet the blue bra lady they ripped half her clothes off and are looking at her. That goes against everything they claim they are for.
I’m inclined to think the men there are afraid of women by their abusive behavior.
If she want’s to display beauty, shaving her armpits would be a good start.
That phenomenon is almost completely culturally American and Canadian.
A pox on all the Abrahamic religions. Their unending war against women is only one aspect of what is so wrong with them. The moment a believer accepts as reasonable the insane idea that it was reasonable and even a very good thing that the father of all three evil “great” religions — Judaism, Islam and Christianity — should, like a prototypical Adolf Eichman, follow the voice in his head and prepare to follow murderous orders directed against his own son, that is the moment when he or she is truly lost.
If Satan existed no doubt he would live deep under the perversely named Holy Land (with summer homes in such ungodly places as Texas, Oklahoma and Rumania). Isn’t it curious that such an unlikely substance as petroleum also exists in oceanic quantities under or immediately surrounding these very same places. Hmmm. Based on such well documented evidence, perhaps we should consider developing an entire new theology based on these phenomena.
I have difficulty with your rationale. You express anger at followers of Abrahamic religions for believing Abraham was righteous for being willing to follow God’s command to kill his own son. You seem to conveniently forget that God was testing Abraham, Abraham’s son was not sacrificed, and Abraham remained faithful to God. He’s was nothing like Adolf Eichman who was a delusional blood thirsty low crawling snake and a wimp bereft of fortitude. Abraham was just the opposite. The prospect of having to kill his son made him very sad and confused. The divine command tested his metal to the utmost limit on account of the fact Abraham loved his son like no other father did. God asked Abraham to give up what he cherished most in life. Abraham like a good son was willing to submit to his father’s will.
I haven’t expressed anger at followers of Abrahamic religions, I have expressed disgust with their stupid brutal religions, all of which (at least among the more primitive scriptural-thumping sects) teach reverence for a Copper Age pastoralist psychopath who overcame what you say is sadness and confusion to take a knife to his own son’s throat. The fact he was supposedly being tested (by one hell of a sadistic god, by the way) doesn’t change the fact that Abraham was fully prepared to slit said throat.
The perverse message here is we should be blindly obedient to authority. It’s an effective management strategy designed for terrorized slaves. Free men and women — and even humble animals — know better. The scum in the dock at Nurenburg claimed blind obedience as their alibi. They went to the gallows and we can all be glad they did. To hell with a god who would ask such a thing as was asked of Abraham! If it was a test, Abraham failed it dismally. To hell with Abraham! And, frankly, to hell with all his followers!
You’re deliberately misinterpreting Scripture to suit your own argument. Remember, Scripture is addressed to believers, not unbelievers to whom it has no relevance. Therefore, contrary to your assertion, the message is not about being blindly obedient to human authorities. In fact, Scripture reminds us that man cannot be trusted on account of sin. It further reminds us to put our ultimate trust in God our creator who sustains us (not the misdeeds we freely choose to do). This is what Abraham did.
That’s right, “have no relevance.” Closed systems such as the one you would escape into allow no argument. I don’t interpret “scripture”, as you call it, to begin with. I refer to obvious truths outside of your perverted system of interpreting reality. You don’t get to establish truth based upon your unholy scriptures, based upon teachings that would appall Jesus.
What are you, the Taliban or something? What do you have against women??
Islam isn’t an “Abrahamic” religion, though Muslims claim it so. It’s a horrible bastardization of the original version.
Christians treat everyone as equals, including women. If they don’t, they’re not Christian, plain and simple.
Judge not, lest you be judged also. Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone.
(And this is a reply to PeterTaber, below, since comments are closed).
Telling the truth isn’t judging, and I do not go around saying all Muslims are bad people, but rather that Islam itself as a system is bad. I have read enough of the Koran to KNOW the differences between Islam and Christianity. We DO NOT worship the same God.
So Islam isn’t an Abrahamic religion, huh? Because you say so, right? Because you, who of course would never judge others and cast stones about their bastardized religion, just know how Islam is so very different from your own, is that it? Admit it — and God Almighty strike you dead if you lie — didn’t you turn to this article because there was mention of a blue bra?
Look at those ‘soldiers’. Cowards – every single one.
she should be stoned for exposing herself like that- trollop
Yo Kennnyyyyy!

Profile of the Sociopath
This website summarizes some of the common features of descriptions of the behavior of sociopaths.
Glibness and Superficial Charm
Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving
behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly
hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to
be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.
Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as “their right.”
Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible
for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get
caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities.
Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.
Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their
core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and
opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices
who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let
nothing stand in their way.
Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it
is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged
by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would
upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their
promises.
Incapacity for Love
Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.
Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only
contempt for others’ feelings of distress and readily taking advantage
of them.
Obama creates alliances with the Muslim brotherhood-
The Muslim brotherhood mandates Sharia law-
Sharia law oppresses women-
The Muslim brotherhood wants all Americans & Israelis dead-
But in America,
We have to be “sensitive” to others that want us dead-
We have to down size our military to balance the budget from a runaway administration that gives a new meaning to “be all you can be” in the new gay Army
We cant have religious or Christmas symbols in public places, but have to be “sensitive” to those that are able to display their beliefs
And one wonders why 3/4 of Americans think Washington is nothing more than a bunch of corrupt liberal control freaks hell bent on rewriting the Constitution
