HAMPDEN, Maine — Before the first bell rang at Hampden Academy on Monday morning, a 17-year-old female student started acting strangely and was taken to the hospital by ambulance, Police Chief Joe Rogers said.

Police have determined the girl consumed some type of drug, he said.

Sgt. Dan Stewart went to the school to investigate, but his investigation still was not complete by 1 p.m.

“He wasn’t sure what she took,” Rogers said.

Someone at the school called for an ambulance, which arrived as students headed into the school. Students started sending text messages to each other about the incident as it happened.

The teenager was removed from the gym-cafeteria area of the school, which also is where the nurse’s office is located.
