BUCKSPORT — The top-seeded Bucksport Golden Bucks scored two touchdowns in the final 2:30 of the first half en route to a 21-12 victory over the No. 5 Foxcroft Academy Ponies in an Eastern Maine Class C semifinal Friday night.
The win set up an EM Class C final next Saturday in Bucksport against the second-ranked Orono Red Riots. Bucksport beat Orono in the regular season 35-12 at Bucksport.
Chris Shorey scored on a six-yard run five seconds into the second quarter to give the Ponies a 6-0 lead before the Golden Bucks responded when quarterback Mike Cummings ripped off a 24-yard TD run with 2:30 left in the half.
After the Bucks held the Ponies to a three-and-out, they took over on the Foxcroft 45, were aided by a pass interference penalty and drove down to the 2 where Shawn Smith ran in their second TD.
After a scoreless third quarter, Foxcroft cut the Bucks’ lead to 13-12 when Zac Smith scored on an 8-yard run.
Cummings added some cushion to the Bucksport lead when he scored on a 50-yard run with 2:30 left in the game.
Foxcroft’s Ryan Rebar caught a 72-yard pass to move the ball down to the Bucksport 4 on the next series, but Bucksport forced a fumble two plays later to secure its victory.
Cummings paced the 10-0 Bucks with 122 rushing yards on 12 carries and completed 6 of 12 passes for 63 yards. Jake Stewart was his primary target as he caught four passes for 36 yards. Shawn Smith contributed 97 rushing yards on 20 carries.
Rebar caught two passes for 91 yards for 6-4 Foxcroft.
Leavitt 47, Hampden 22
At Turner Center, Jordan Hersom led the Hornets into the PTC Class B final with a five-touchdown performance against the Broncos.
Hersom ran for two TDs and passed for three, and Ian Durgin scored once on a pass reception and once by rushing for 10-0 Leavitt.
Logan Steward scored all of the points for Hampden (6-4) with three touchdown runs and two two-point conversions.
Durgin opened the Leavitt scoring by catching a 35-yard TD pass from Hersom in the first quarter and added a 30-yard TD run, also in the first quarter.
Hersom then tacked on an 18-yard TD run in the first quarter and threw to Brian Bedard for a 26-yard TD in the second quarter.
After Steward put Hampden on the board with a 13-yard run, Jake Ouellette punched the ball in from 2 yards for a 35-6 halftime lead.
After halftime, Steward raced 52 yards for Hampden’s second TD and added the two-point run to make it 35-14.
Hersom went 14 yards for his second TD run and passed 11 yards to Oscar Rodriguez for his third TD pass.
Steward’s 2-yard run, followed by his rush for two points, completed the scoring.
