Portland City Council endorses Civic Center renovation

PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland City Council unanimously endorsed a $33 million Cumberland County bond proposal to modernize the Cumberland County Civic Center on Monday night.

The council encouraged Portland voters to support the project, citing the important role the arena has regionally.

The Civic Center has generated between $15 million and $20 million in economic impact for the region, supporting hundreds of jobs for county residents, and the critical need to renovate the facility.

With interest rates and construction costs at historic lows and the impending retirement of the bond for the Cumberland County jail renovations, the Civic Center project and $33 million bond proposal is expected to have little to no effect on property taxes.

Residents will vote on the proposal on Election Day, Nov. 8.
