BANGOR, Maine — A vandal or vandals caused more than $20,000 in damage when rocks were used to break windows at four businesses near the Bangor Mall, police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Thursday.

“Tuesday night and Wednesday night they went out and were heaving rocks,” the sergeant said. “Wendy’s was hit Tuesday night and the rest, Uno’s, Applebee’s and Bangor Mall Cinemas, were done Wednesday night.”

Rocks were thrown through front, side and entry windows of the businesses.

Officials at Wendy’s estimate the cost of repairing the damage at between $16,000 and $18,000, Edwards said. The other three businesses are compiling damage estimates, so the initial damage estimates could increase, he said.

“It could be closer to $30,000,” Edwards said. “Those are really expensive windows that have been hit. The real damage costs are not in at this time.”

Officer Dennis Townsend and Detective Cliff Worcester, who is leading the investigation, are working with the businesses to determine if there are surveillance images of the vandals throwing the rocks that might be useful in identifying them, Edwards said.

Because of the amount of damage, the person or persons who threw the rocks could face felony charges, the sergeant said.

Those with information about the vandalism may call Bangor Police Department at 947-7382. The department’s anonymous tip line can be reached by pressing ext. 6, and Detective Worcester can be reached at ext.95721.
