Bangor Daily News receives 8 awards from New England Associated Press executives

“Country Music Dancers“ is the first place photo in the Feature category in Class I of the 2011 New England Associated Press News Executives Association contest. In this photo, Patrick Cote and his wife Dolores of Brewer dance to the country music of Family Traditions during a benefit for country music fan Willy Hall of Bucksport at the Happy Acres dance club in March 2011. Cote is the bass player for Mainely Country and knew Hall as a fan. "He was a great guy, always supported country music," said Cote of Hall, who passed away on March 1, 2011.

BANGOR, Maine — Bangor Daily News staffers received eight awards in the 2011 New England Associated Press News Executives Association contest, results of which were announced Wednesday. The BDN was recognized in the Class 1 category, which includes the largest newspaper organizations in the region.

Receiving awards for the BDN were:

• Becky Bowden, display desk editor (First place, Feature Page design, “Pants, Pants Revolution”)

• Eric Zelz, graphics director (First place, Informational Graphic, “ Exploring Juniper Ridge landfill”)

• Kevin Bennett, photographer (First place, Feature Photo, “ Country Music Dancers“)

• Roxanne Saucier, editor; Ardeana Hamlin, Dale McGarrigle, assistant editors; Abigail Curtis, Heather Steeves, reporters (Second place, General Interest Weekly, “The Midcoast Beacon”)

• John Clarke Russ, photographer (Third place, Portrait-Profile photo, “ Amputee Athlete“) and (Third place, Sports Feature photo, “ World Cup Biathlon“)

• Gabor Degre, photographer (Third place, Sports Action photo, “ Freestyle swimmer“)
