JACKMAN, Maine — A 5-year-old boy was killed early Tuesday when a Canadian driver fell asleep at the wheel of a tractor-trailer truck and the vehicle flipped over and spilled its tree-length load of logs onto the house where the youngster was asleep on a couch, police said.

The boy, who died at the scene, was identified as Liam Mahaney.

Christian Cloutier, 57, of Quebec, had rounded a slight curve at about 2:30 a.m. on U.S. Route 201 when his vehicle struck two utility poles and the vehicle flipped onto its side, according to Lt. Carl Gottardi II of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department. The southbound truck ended up against the house at 510 Main St. and the logs fell out, demolishing the first floor. The impact also caused the second floor of the building to collapse to the ground level, Gottardi said Tuesday.

When the accident occurred, there were six people inside the house: an adult, Mahaney and another child on the first floor and an adult and two children on the second floor, according to Gottardi. The other five occupants of the house were taken to the Jackman Health Center for treatment and all but one had been released as of late Tuesday afternoon. That person, Mahaney’s mother, was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan with injuries that were not life-threatening, he said.

Cloutier, who told police that he fell asleep at the wheel, was taken by ambulance to the Jackman Health Center and was later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. His injuries also appeared not to be life-threatening, Gottardi said. The 2011 Peterbilt truck and trailer owned by D.A.N. Express of Quebec was heavily damaged and was impounded for further inspection.

The house involved in the accident is owned by Jack and Murielle Carrier of Jackman, according to a town official. It was being rented to Mr. and Mrs. Gary Mahaney and another family.

The crash knocked the power out for residents in the area and Route 201 was closed for about two hours as the power lines and logs were removed. Gottardi said one lane was still closed as of late Tuesday afternoon.

The accident is under reconstruction by the sheriff’s department and the Maine State Police.

Gottardi said it appeared that speed may have been a factor in the accident. He said the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office will review the accident to see what, if any, prosecution is warranted.

Deputies Eugene Cole and Michael Ross were assisted at the scene by Jackman and West Forks firefighters, the Jackman Health Center ambulance, U.S. Border Patrol agents, Maine State Police, and an ambulance from Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Poor little boy, my condolences to his family, they must be so hearth broken. I’m sorry for the driver, he has a big load to carry, hope he was not driving to fast or not paying attention. It is so sad to lose a young life.May he R.I.P.

The randomness of this type of accident is what makes this so tragic.  RIP little guy.

It angers me that this happened. The posted speed limit is 25mph. The people of Jackman, including myself, have been trying to slow down the trucks for years. I have made many calls, nothing is ever done. The Police come to Jackman on the weekends when the trucks do not haul. They would rather give grandma a ticket for no seatbelt than give a speeding ticket to a log truck driving in town at over 50 mph. Shame on the Maine State Police, and Somerset County Police for letting this happen.

Shouldn’t be happening. I have had many instances of very aggressive Canadian truckers either crowding, tailgating and the biggest thing for them is failure to yield right-of-way. If he is found to be in the wrong,  I hope they throw the book at him. I hope the little guy didn’t feel anything.

I guess it’s only Canadian truck drivers that do that right Jack… no others? And you had “many instances”; must be the Canadians singling you out because no other truck drivers would ever do that to you right? …Please!

My condolences to the family, very tragic and sad!

Actually, I work on many logging truck routes like Rt9 and Rt15 that are frequented by a large precentage of Canadian truckers, they are without question more aggressive than our indigenious truckers, in my opinion. Nearly every close call I’ve had has been a Canadian truck. So you don’t have a clue about what your talking about. “Artist” please, get a real job.

  • Anonymous

I’ve met those trucks passing each other on a blind hill before with nowhere for me to go but off the road. Those jerks fly down the road. I would not be surprised if speeding had something to do with this. My heart breaks for the parents. What a horrible, horrible thing

This is heart-wrenching…we’re losing so many young ones lately. My condolences to the family, I’ll be saying a prayer for you and your little one.  I’m hoping this was sheer tragedy that couldn’t be avoided, both for the family’s and truck driver’s sake.  That has to be a load on one’s conscience, negligent or not…

exactly.  cops look at taxpayers as a revenue stream.  i live on a road with a race course on it.  and guess when i see the cops?  on the days it’s not operating.  bikers and cars are constantly going 70 plus down my rural road.  i call the cops and they never show.  they are too busy writing chickenshit tickets.

if they really cared about our safety truckers like this would be slowed down and the fast and furious cars would be slowed as well…  not all cops are like this but far too many are.

I lived in Jackman for 20+ years and still know many people there-have to go on Facebook to find out who this was-thoughts and prayers for this family.Jackman is a very tight knit community where everybody know everybody else,so this will affect the whole community. Those trucks are usually top-heavy and overloaded-I’m surprised it hasn’t happened sooner

skylodge hill is another place that trucks think it is a I-95, especially those large cement trucks from canada, i almost got hit standing on the middle of the hill waiting for my mom when i was about 12 or so.  They ended up passing in the middle of the hill.  I send my sympathy out to the family of the little boy.

Wow…just goes to show that you need to live every day like it’s your last. You never know what may happen “out of the blue.”

    Simply tragic.

Don’t blame just the police–yes it’s true there is no local PD is Jackman, and they really only come up here when specifically called for an incident, but I think the problem goes higher, to the political powers-that-be.  Besides tourism, the logging industry is about all there is up here, and the police know that to mess with the truckers for speeding or weight (and I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts this truck was SIGNIFICANTLY overweight as well as going too fast!) is basically a waste of time.  any tickets issued will be “taken care of” by a simple phone call from the company owner to the issuing agency.

Logging trucks are always dangerous because of the load. It makes me wonder about people suggest that we allow logging trucks with three trailers.

Other things that make little sense to me is having timber shipped to mills on the other side of the mountain and the driver being paid by the trip, so the more trips he completes in the day, the more he makes. That can encourage recklessness.

Anyone that has driven on a narrow mountain road and encountered a fast moving logging truck knows the feeling of terror they can cause. Then even if the truck stays under control you still have the fear of the load breaking loose.

Oh my god this is terrible. That poor little boy!! I live on a road that logging trucks use all day and night.. I see how fast they go and it scares me that one might lose control and go straight for my house… and this is truly a nightmare come true. God bless his little soul and I pray for strength for his family. This is heartbreaking    :(

I can tell you that the Canadian truck drivers where I live go to damn fast..

Such a horrible tragedy for this family.

The driver had to be going pretty fast on that curve.

God bless the family and friends involved in this terrible accident……My family is from Jackman, I went up last weekend to visit My Mom, I always try to find a place that is safe to pull over when I get a big truck on my butt.. Then you have to be aware of the moose at the same time…  It’s always an experience. It really is one of the nicest areas in the state….

Last time I checked when you are sleeping behind the wheel you have no control over the speed you are doing. Speed most likely was a factor but the bigger factor is that he fell asleep. If he had not fallen asleep I highly doubt he would have crashed.

  • Kevin_Of_Bangor

Did it not state 6 hours ago he fell asleep? Even if he was driving the posted limit he still would have crashed because he fell asleep.

This just angers me so much, these log trucks are just like some young teenagers ,they drive as fast as they want.  I feel so bad for this family and hope the little girl rest in peace.  If anyone knows of where to send donations please let me know

Awake or asleep. Where I live the logging trucks fly by so fast they shake my house in a posted 35 mph zone. And I am assuming that these drivers are mostly awake. So as I said, awake or asleep, speed is a constant factor in these accidents. Now I am going to hear how they are very heavy and hard to handle. Isn’t this just another reason to drive slower and more carefully with these trucks? These terrible accidents will just keep on so long as we have overloaded trucks speeding around the back roads of Maine. Rest in Peace little one and my prayers for the family for the strength to make it through this terrible time.

I agree with you 100% that they do speed but the fact is that the driver fell asleep. He could have been going the posted limit and he still would have crashed. That is the point I’m trying to get people to understand.

Everyone wants to blame it on speed and speed is not what caused this tragic crash.

  • Anonymous

He would have had to snooze for a significant period of time without going off the road to pick up a lot of speed, and I also believe a truck won’t pick up a lot of speed without shifting gears. So if he was speeding, he was probably already doing so before dozing off and going off the road rather quickly thereafter.

My thoughts have been with this family all day since i first heard about it, this is truly a tragic accident that shouldn’t have happend, but then again that is why they are called “Accidents” yes he probably was going to fast, yes he fell asleep, but i can GUARANTEE this driver would rather wish it was him that died instead of this little boy, Yes some drivers often drive to fast, and who knows he may have felt good when he left the border so he didnt figure he needed a nap, if i recall there is only one truck friendly pull off between jackman and the border… This is truly a very tragic event, I feel sorry for this family and the Trucker

  • Anonymous

Probably with less damage if he was going slower though. That is the point of speed zones, not that all accidents will be avoided, but that the ones that occur will be less serious.

no the article only provided very little information until 6 pm.

    So then
the question is why was he driving so tired, what do his log books look like,
and are they legitimate? A trucker can only drive so many hours before they
have to rest for a reason, and I have known way too many truckers that do not
keep legitimate logs so that they can drive longer hours, which has the
potential to end up in a tragedy like this. Whatever the reason, a little boy
has lost his chance at life, and a family has lost their little boy.

By what is seen in the pictures, this guy was criminal.  The speed at 25 a tractor has been known to take down poles.  Yet for what is seen I am sure we will see his DAC reflecting negligence (every truck driver has a DAC that is stored in computer that reflects what kind of operator they are, even I have one, clean thank you).

There is no excuse for this to have happened.  Its plain to see.  SPEED kills.

You bring tears to my eyes 66readerwriter…

This story is breaking my heart totally…poor little man who died way too young… My heart is totally with his family…

We’re not from Maine, but we’re going at least 6 times a year and we’re almost passing by Jackman, we’re always slow down to the limit, for everyone’s safety but also we have our 2 boys on the backseat when we’re in Maine. We’re on the speed limit most of time (when we overpass them it’s 5 miles more but only on the 55 limits and no town or village around) But most of time we’re being pushed in the trunk by other cars or truck, and we pull over to let them pass and sometimes our car is shaking because they’re going too fast…

There is way too much story about speed or people who’ve felt asleep at the wheel… It’s not that hard to pull over and take a little nap!!

He most likely was speeding before he fell asleep. I’m not going to disagree with anyone in regards to that because logging truck drivers are notorious for speeding.

I don’t know for fact he was speeding because even if he was going the posted limit that truck with that load is going to cause a lot of damage regardless when the driver falls asleep.

the trucks could all be going the speed limit and following all of the rules and people would still point fingers. accidents do happen. the driver said he fell asleep and you people are convinced he had to be speeding and overweight. I bet if a car had done this it would have been just a mistake in the publics eye, only because they arent big heavy and speeding. It is always interesting to see what the public has to say when an accident involving a truck happens, and most of the time the people commenting are stupid to the trucking world! it is awful that this happened BUT I would guarantee that the driver would rather be dead himself, than the little boy. again accidents DO happen, and there will never be no way of stopping them.

A person doesn’t just simply fall asleep at the wheel without some warning that they are sleepy and need to stop driving and rest.  The driver needs to be charged with manslaughter because accident or not, his negligence killed a little boy, injured most of his family, destroyed their home, destroyed their lives and the family is likely to never fully recover from what has happened.  I’m sure the driver feels badly for what happened, but he was negligent and that’s the bottom line.

YES! Something has to be done about the way logging trucks are driven. I’ve had too many close calls with them myself. I live on route one and have almost gotten hit while walking 5 times by drivers who are not paying attention. If I’m out driving in my car, they pass me doing about 80 or more. Just recently while turning into my driveway, I had one almost slam into my rear end because he wasn’t watching the road. I was doing about 10 mph IF THAT, turning into my driveway (and yes, I did have my directional blinking). He swerved around the right of my truck still doing at least 70 and missed my vehicle by about a foot. Also, just recently I had one try to pass me on route one on a hill. Our vehicles were side by side and another car came over the hill doing about 50 in a direct line with him. The guy driving the logging truck pulled to the right forcing me off the road. I had to brake quick, if I hadn’t of been able to slow down enough (I was doing the limit of 50), I would have ended up overturned in the ditch.

Something has got to be done about the way they drive. I feel sorry for the family of the little boy because this accident is one that should not have happened and could have been avoided. Why didn’t the trucker just pull over someplace and take a nap for a bit, it would have saved a life and a lot of suffering too. Is wood all that important that people have to lose their lives over it? I hope the logging company is sued for everything they have. Hope this company has the decency to build this family a brand new home to replace the one it destroyed. My feelings it to get ALL logging trucks off the road period. I’ve seen too many accidents, and wayyy too many close calls, not just mine but other people too. It seems the logging truckers don’t have any respect for human life at all, well, except for their own.

Everyone seems to be in agreement that the basic cause in this tragic event is cronic neglect of the posted speed.  I grew up in the north Maine woods and have witnessed this first hand.  I also understand that the drivers need to make a living.  Perhaps there is a way to enforce the limits without a strain on the local enforcement manpower.   Other state and community governments have addressed speeding with the use of photoradar.  In this case maybe the civil penalty should be tied to GVW.   Dollars/MPH over the limit times vehicle weight.  Send it to the vehicle owner with a picture of the driver and plate.  $1000/offense should slow them down.

I agree, it would be good to get all the big rigs off the road.  But unfortunately we are still dependent on mother nature for building materials not to mention moving essentilal supplies to isolated communities.  Hindsight being 20/20 maybe we should have diversified our transportation system and built a few more rails and canals for moving raw materials and finished goods.  It would have also been easier to secure due to limited access.

I’m sure there are a few other ways to implement enforcement.  They usually don’t work unless there is a substantial financial penalty to the coporation and operator.  After all jail is still three squares and a flop and in some cases that is the disruptive thinking you’re up against.   I don’t particularly like the big brother approach either.  The issue is how to provide constant enforcement.  So far the only laws I know of that are immedately and universally enforced are those of physics as evidenced.   There’s a lot of power in a rig like that, enough to force a rather large house off it’s foundation.  My prayers also go out to all of the families and friends touched by this tradgey.

What type of information is recorded by the DAC?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583400677 Jean-Francois Audet

The logging trucks go fast no matter which side of the border they’re on, they’ll only slow down in places they know a cop is posted. I live 35 miles on the other side of the border and this feels close and it’s not a way to die. Not for one so young…

From reading your comments i see that the State or County Police doesn’t show up very often in town. Jackman will probably have, for the next few months at least, an obvious police presence. But that’s way too high a price to pay to finally have a patrol car around.

As for the driver: This is a brand new truck, it’s got one of those black boxes just like an airplane. Everything on the engine, acceleration, speed, braking. It becomes a useful piece of evidence when the whole accident goes to court.

    J-F, St-Georges, Beauce, Qc

P.S. I haven’t driven in Jackman since i got my licence, but i promise i’ll drive the limit when i drive there, even in the middle of the night.

Accountability.  You’re tired, you sleep.   You drove your maximum hours, you stop.  Period.   What is so hard to understand here.?   I have no pity for the driver.  I have  a CDL, and it’s pretty clear the responsibility you have while  driving, and your decisions cost the life of a person.  A huge fine for the owning company, and a lifetime revocation of his license won’t bring the little boy back, but it will send a clear message to drivers.

    Condolences to the family.

  • Downeasta

Anything driver related.  Speeding, accidents, any infractions, abandoned equipment (peed off at company and walks away with out returning rig).  Company notes of why you left and what it takes for rehire.  Miles driven and so on.  It is a way of a company to see what kind of a driver you are based on what you have or have not done.

  • Anonymous

Accidently driving so fast as to knock down two, not one power poles and crash a load of logs after the trailer flips onto it side, into a house and have it collapse? Speed is not an accident.

  • Downeasta

There was no need for this driver to be working a load at 2:30 am.  This rig should have been parked and he should have been on his 10 hours off getting sleep.  95% of all trucking accidents happen between 10pm and 5 am, if you drive, stop creating this statistic, you will fall asleep no matter how long you have done this.

According to the Maine CDL license manual, heavy loads on hilly or curvy roads should be BELOW the posted speed limit.   It’s designed to reduce the damage that might possibly be done should an accident occur.  I am not stupid to the trucking world as I have a Class A CDL.  Plus, running loads like that at 2:30 in the morning is not exactly prudent.

  • Anonymous

According to the CDL manual, you should be driving slower at night, especially in the middle of the night.

The DAC is just a report, much like a credit report, but on the operation of a large truck.  The black box is electronic,  and it keeps information such as the length of time the truck has been on the road, speed, erratic driving, braking, and even condition of the truck, and malfunctions.  Some trucks equipped with satellite antennas transmit this data live time to the trucks owner, that way even if the black box is destroyed, its data is intact.  It proves invaluable, especially in a case like this one.

Every time you double the speed of a vehicle, you quadruple the inertia it has.  If he had been doing the speed limit, the first two power poles he hit would have slowed him considerably, by the time the truck rolled over (perhaps it would not even have rolled over) and slid into the house, the inertia would have been only a fraction of what it would have been needed to collapse a house onto the first floor.

Who was it that said there are no accidents, only pre-planned carelessness?  This was not “just an accident”.  The driver was running fast and tired.  He should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, as should anyone in any type of vehicle who ignores the rules of the road and causes injuries.  I know many truck drivers who are excellent and safe drivers.  This driver is not representative of the many safe CDL drivers.  As to the making a living issue, how well will this driver provide for his family now?  Unsafe drivers benefit no one.

My prayers and thought are with the Mahaney family and his community.

I am definitely a liberal and not a LePage Supporter and will proudly say so, but I think “linking” this to LePage is stretching it a bit.  The logging industry has been operating with this kind of recklessness for years.  I don’t know how the driver is going to live with this;  I know if I was responsible for causing a little boys death I would find it hard to go on living.  Rest in peace little one and prayers for his family.

We have accidents all the time up here in Jackman and most of them are Canadian trucks. yeah right ! come up to Wallagrass and sit on my front porch and witness what we do in the middle of the night… A speed limit of 45 and the trucks are doing over 60 most times… One way to slow done trucks is to take the dang radios out of them or at lest make it illegal for them to warn other truck drivers of where the cops are !!!! We’ve called in to the barracks also, they dispatch an officer and they show up for about and hour stop a few cars then we don’t see them for weeks :-/ It’s not just the log trucks either ! There’s a lot of chip trucks who are driving as fast…

Maybe it’s time law enforcement does more commercial vehicle checks in Maine..

wow thats an unfair judgement to make. He was only offering another point of view. His point is justified — whenever there is an accident involving a truck people jump to be arm chair investigators and start forming their online lynch mobs!

As to  the point of them being on the road at 2:30 a.m. — the logging world does not run 9-5. A lot of trucks (not just logging trucks) are on the roads at that hour of the day.

This was a tragedy and my thoughts go out to the family of that little boy and also to the truck driver and his family. Neither family will ever be the same again. Very sad.

That’s a heck of a way to wake up.  Every single person in that house had to have been jolted out of a dead sleep and thrown to wherever they landed and then become coherent enough to try to figure out what was going on.  I cannot even imagine it!  They must’ve thought there was an earthquake or something.  Then you go to check on your kids, it is heart-wrenching.  Prayers to this family, they are going to have nightmares and flashbacks for a long time.

Very tragic indeed i feel for the loss of this family. I also feel a loss of inhumanity it seems that many have suffered before an investigation is even complete that they feel the need throw stones. Its almost as though no one else has ever made a mistake, when will i see the glow of the villagers coming over the hill with torches and pitch forks. Im sure this truck driver did not have this event scheduled and I’m sure he is living through hell knowing what has happened. Take a second think both sides of the story before you anger so quickly. Or at least wait until an investigation is complete.

so very sad for the family that has been forever tramatized by this terrible accident.  It is time that we change some of the rules for log haulers.  They push them selves to exhaustion to make a living.  They are not govered the way over the road drivers are.  Pray that as a community we can all pull together and help this family grieve for thier loss.  Then pray that we can find a way to make an industry that keeps so many employed a safer industry so that we never have to read another article about the loss of life.

A very sad accident.  My thoughts and prayers are with the little boy and his family.  I don’t feel bad for the driver.  I’ve never dosed off without realizing I was falling asleep.  If he were not careless a 5 year old boy would be enjoying his childhood.  He not only robbed the little boy of his life, but has also robbed the family from being able to see their child grow up.

I was fishing in Jackman last weekend right on the side of 201 about 5 of miles from the border.  I had a friend from work and two small kids with us.  In a matter of 1 hour 3 border patrol thugs stopped to question what we were doing and if everything was “all good”.  Instead of harassing law abiding citizens repeatedly trying to catch some brookies, why don’t they stay on the border and make sure the Canadian truckers coming in aren’t going to kill any more people?

I don’t think they speed anymore than the smaller vehicles on the road do…I feel it’s that they are much bigger vehicles and people are more scared of them.  The truck driver was wrong in driving while he was tired and maybe he was going to fast but this is an awful thing that he has to live with (have a little compassion) for the rest of his life and a good part of you are on here bashing truckers.  We all depend on trucks in some sort of way everyday.  I have two children and can not even imagine what this family is going through…R.I.P Liam.

who suggests 3 trailers? we dont even haul 2 !
    ******************************************
While driving to Bangor from Ellsworth this morning on 1-A, I saw TWO logging trucks entering 1-A, and they EACH had TWO trailers…fully loaded.  I watched them in my sideview mirror as they pulled out onto 1-A—the second truck pulled out in front of a yellow SUV.

must be talking about a Canadian “B” Train, canadians are the only ones that haul them, and i highly doubt there is truth to this considering they are only suppose to be allowed to go from Calais to Bailyville and houlton to New Limerick mill… other then that the only ones that haul doubles are fright trucks

My family is from Jackman, I went up last weekend to visit My Mom, I always try to find a place that is safe to pull over when I get a big truck on my butt.. Then you have to be aware of the moose at the same time…
    ***************************************************
is there still the moose warning system in the middle of the road up there?  It’s a couple hundred feet of rumble strips all the way across the road and overhead flashing yellow lights with black and yellow moose road signs.

yes sir we do, and often times we do travel the same speed or slower than cars, its just that we are so big it feels/seems as though we are going much faster then we are, im not saying drivers dont speed and such because alot of drivers do, but im saying a truck can be doing 60/65 and the wind from a truck makes it seem as though its going much faster than it actually is

should of taken a picture, because i know it highly unlikely that you actually see a Maine Truck, hauling TWO log trailers on the maine road the cops would have had that guy stopped within 5 minutes of entering the hot top, You may have seen a “Wheeler” with a trailer behind it, or as i said before it was most likely a Canadian “B” train which are allowed with permits, ive been all over the state from fort kent to kittery and the only double log trailers i have seen behind a maine truck were on the golden road… im not backed into a corner, just point out untrue facts trying to make us as drivers look much worse then we are…

didn’t rubberneck or gawk in order to get a good look at the license plate to determine it’s origin.  Was too busy keeping my eyes on the road ahead of me.  May have been Canadian…yet I fail to see how you can take that to mean I am somehow lying just to make you look bad…..unless you have paranoia issues.  After all, you DID say “make us as drivers look much worse then we are…”, indicating you and others in your profession ARE bad drivers.

  • http://www.facebook.com/patrickleo11 Patrick Worster

nope, no paranoia, and been driving truck everyday for the last 6 years, had my license 9, got a clean record, i know there are some that do not have clean records etc, they are the ones that make the good ones look bad

I believe they’re was at one time on top of the hill in moose river above sky lodge, I did not see them this last trip , I’m sure I didn’t feel the rumble strips. I left 30 years ago and go up 4/5 times a year to vist family, Brother and mother..

  • listenuppeople

UPS hauls 2 short boxes, and a few other companys haul short boxes close to the interstate,, You are right they’re are no double log trails except the Pelletiers on the golden road.. Don’t pay much attention to some of the people on the BDN blog. There is always someone wanting to argue.WP

Not bashing truckers…it’s all about making $$$ for the big corporations pushing for more production as well as hiring untrained drivers. You know that’s the truth trucker friends. The laws must be more stringent to make those corps. raise standards and make our roads safer! Until the big guys are hit hard, there will continue to be fatalities…children and families are at risk here! Consequences are the only way things will change in this state! LD144 was only the beginning.

Yea, exactly bunch of know nothings, that think they know it all is what it amounts to, they make valid points but they wasnt there, they dont know what its like, its easy for them to go to their 9-5 office job and go home, they have never had to get up at 12:30/1:00 to go to work to avoid lines at mills, beat the traffic so we dont have to deal with inconsiderate people that are on the roads these days, we have all seen them
