Cooking with Moxie: Unusual recipes abound during festival celebrating drink

LISBON, Maine — The Moxie Festival Recipe Contest and Chug-n-Challenge will be held on Saturday, July 9, during the three-day Moxie Festival weekend.

Last year’s entrants came from Bangor to Weymouth, Mass., and Moxie recipes included a cake, barbeque sauce, mustard, and Moxie cous-cous.

There is no fee for the Moxie Recipe Contest. Registration forms are available in three ways: online at; at the Main Street Stage in Lisbon Falls on Saturday, July 9; or by emailing

All recipes must be original and contain Moxie as an ingredient. Entries must be brought to the Main Street Stage on Main Street between 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. in a disposable container with registration form.

The judging will begin at 1 p.m., after the parade at the Main Street Stage. The top-rated Moxie Creation Recipe will be awarded $50 and a 2011 Moxie Festival T-Shirt. Other winners will receive award ribbons.

The Moxie Chug-n-Challenge will take place Saturday, July 9 at 2 p.m. at the Main Street stage.

There is a $5 entry fee and there will be a limit of five contestants.

The contenders will stand side by side in front of a table with a 12-pack of Moxie. At sound of horn contender will open the can and drink the contents. When finished, the can will be put in their bucket for counting.

The time to consume will be two minutes.

Since 1983, The Moxie Festival in Lisbon has been held on the second weekend in July. The 2011 Moxie Festival weekend is July 8-10.

The festival now includes a three-day Pow Wow; Friday night fireworks; a Saturday parade; 5K race; and on Sunday, the Chief Worumbo Androscoggin River Race. Moxie was designated Maine’s official soft drink on May 20, 2005.
