AUGUSTA, Maine — A bill that would beef up Maine’s right-to-know law is going before the Maine Legislature’s Judiciary Committee.

The bill, which has more than 30 sponsors and co-sponsors, would make changes to the state’s Freedom of Access law to ensure that public documents are made available promptly.

The proposal would give state agencies a five-day deadline to provide documents, as opposed to current law that gives agencies five days simply to respond to a request.

It also requires state departments and agencies to have a designee to deal with requests, as well as an assistant attorney general dedicated to mediating disputes.

The bill’s primary sponsor is Republican Sen. Richard Rosen of Bucksport. But a diverse mix of co-sponsors support the bill, which was due for debate Wednesday.
