Anyone interested in celebrating Earth Day on Friday, April 22, will have several options to choose from. Events are scheduled to take place throughout the day.

The Blue Hill Library will present a lecture at 7 p.m. to coincide with Earth Day. Jym St. Pierre, director of RESTORE: The North Woods, a  non-profit conservation group, will discuss an effort that to establish a 3.2 million-acre national park in the northern woods of Maine. Topics will include the benefits of such a park, what it will take to create it and the environmental issues confronting the forests of northern Maine, among other things.

Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, in partnership with Bar Harbor Bank and Trust, will help local high school students achieve the community service hours they need to graduate by offering a clean-up of the hospital’s Ellsworth campus from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers from the community also will participate.

The University of Maine will hold its “Annual Naked Green Bikes.” Anyone wishing to paint themselves green and ride a bicycle or scooter naked across campus is asked to meet around 11:30 a.m. at York Hall on campus. The event is considered an annual tradition and draws throngs of spectators, said one organizer.

The College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor will hold workshops, presentations, children’s activities, dance and music from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23, on campus. The student-run Earth Day events are aimed at increasing environmental and social awareness, according to organizers.

Anyone with further questions about the events taking place throughout the region on Friday is urged to contact the host organization. All events are free and open to the public.

Earth Day marks the anniversary of what many consider the beginning of the modern environmental movement. It was founded by a U.S. senator in 1970 as a day for environmental awareness and appreciation.
