Will Libya’s dictatorship fall?

Will Muamar Khadafi and his family abdicate their control of Libya in the face of popular protests? Or is the spirit of democracy that is spreading across the Middle East more likely to be doused by a violent military suppression there?
If popular uprisings in Libya and other Middle East nations succeed in toppling dictatorships and monarchies, what sort of governments will emerge in their place? Are participatory republics better, even if they are unfriendly to the U.S.?
