Alleged cow killer among Waldo County indictments

BELFAST, Maine — A man accused of killing two pregnant dairy cows this summer when he reportedly was speeding on a rural road in an attempt to evade police was indicted Friday by the Waldo County grand jury, along with 42 other people.

Anthony D. Jewett, 26, of Liberty was indicted on one count of aggravated criminal mischief, one count of driving to endanger, one count of failure to stop for an officer, one count of criminal speed and one count of cruelty to animals.

Police said that Jewett had been traveling 92 mph in a 55 mph zone on Route 3 on July 27 when a Waldo County Sheriff’s Office deputy tried to pull him over. The driver tried to elude the deputy by speeding away and turning onto several roads, according to police.

One of those was Weymouth Road in Morrill, where a farmhand at FGW Dairy Farm, accompanied by farmer Reid Woodbury’s 6-year-old son, was driving a herd of cattle across the road.

The farmhand snatched the child back from the road to avoid being hit by the speeding car, said Chief Deputy Robert Keating, but Jewett’s red Chevy Cavalier crashed into the crossing cattle.

One cow suffered a fractured pelvis and another broke a leg. Woodbury had to put the cows down the day they were hit. Each was worth $2,000.

A third cow that was hit apparently survived, the farmer said in July.
