Joe Mercurio, who had a productive senior season for UMaine last spring, has moved into the coaching ranks.
Mercurio has joined the staff at High Point (N.C.) University, where he will be a volunteer coach this season for head coach Craig Cozart. He’ll also be working with his younger brother Mike, who is a sophomore at High Point.
Last spring, the catcher earned All-America East first-team honors after batting .363 with 12 home runs, 58 runs batted in and 19 doubles. He committed two errors in 298 chances.
Mercurio, who graduated with a degree in communications, was an assistant coach this summer for the Glens Falls Eagles of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Landry on ‘Surviving the Cut’
Brian Landry, a junior on the University of Maine men’s swimming team, appeared on Wednesday night’s episode of “Surviving the Cut” on the Discovery Channel.
Landry took part in the Army Special Forces Underwater Combat Divers Courses over the summer. The course is geared towards training Special Forces and Rangers personnel to become combat divers.
Landry was chosen as one of 24 to go for a tryout. He spent two weeks at the United State Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. From this course, 12 were selected to go on to the actual courses in Key West, Fla., for six weeks.
Landry was one of 33 to make it through the rigorous training and graduate from the course.
