ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Southwest Harbor man remained in custody Monday after he allegedly held an Ellsworth woman against her will at her home over the weekend.
Ryan L. Cilley, 35, was arrested Sunday and charged with kidnapping and assault.
According to Lt. Harold Page of the Ellsworth Police Department, the incident began innocently enough Thursday when the woman invited Cilley to stay at her home.
Cilley and the woman had been acquainted and had dated in the past, Page said.
“She was trying to help him out,” Page said Monday. “He needed a place to stay, and she said he could crash there [at her home] until he found someplace to stay.”
Things turned bad Friday when Cilley allegedly kept the woman at her home against her will. According to Page, Cilley wouldn’t let her leave and threatened to damage the house if she left. At one point, she did try to leave and Cilley assaulted her and choked her, Page said.
“It was pretty rough,” the lieutenant said.
Cilley had been drinking, according to Page, and late Sunday morning, he passed out. At that point, the woman fled her home and reported the incident to police.
There was no information on the extent of the woman’s injuries. Page said only that she had been treated at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and later released.
Cilley was arrested at the woman’s home on Sunday and taken to the Hancock County Jail, where he remained late Monday afternoon.
