Gray man pleads not guilty in beating death

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — A 20-year-old man charged in a fight that left another young man dead has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

William Googins of Gray was arraigned Monday on charges of manslaughter and aggravated assault in the attack on 24-year-old Eric Benson on May 23 in Portland’s Monument Square.

Police say Googins exchanged words with Benson, who was walking with a female friend, before Googins punched Benson once, knocking him unconscious. Benson fell to the pavement and died hours later at Maine Medical Center.

An autopsy concluded Benson died from blunt force trauma to the head.

The Portland Press Herald says Googins is being held on $100,000 bail.
