HANCOCK, Maine — An Ellsworth man is facing criminal charges after the car he was driving struck a motorcyclist head-on on Route 1 Sunday morning, according to police.

Patrick Bellis, 25, of Ellsworth was driving a 1994 Subaru car west toward Ellsworth around 10:30 a.m. Sunday when it crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound 2005 Suzuki motorcycle driven by Andrew Leonard, 38, of New Gloucester, according to Trooper Greg Roy of the Maine State Police.

Leonard was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was in the intensive care unit, Roy said Sunday afternoon.

Bellis has been charged with aggravated operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, according to the trooper.

“He was uninjured,” Roy said of Bellis.

Bellis smelled of alcohol, the officer said, and was given field sobriety tests at the scene. Police also administered a blood alcohol test of Bellis, but the results of that test are still pending, he said.

The collision occurred in front of the former Mano’s Market, but Bellis’ vehicle continued westward, going through a decorative fence in front of Le Domaine restaurant and coming to rest in the restaurant’s front parking lot, Roy said. The motorcycle was substantially damaged, but the trooper said he did not have monetary estimates for the damage to each vehicle.

Roy said the Subaru’s air bag deployed in the accident and that Bellis told police he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
