CHERRYFIELD, Maine – The State Fire Marshal’s Office says one man is missing following a fire that swept through a farmhouse in Cherryfield.

The fire broke out before dawn Wednesday in the house on Route 1 and the building was flattened in the blaze. At mid-morning it was still smoldering, according to a news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The man’s mother, who also lived there, escaped the fire. She told firefighters her son awakened her to tell her his bedroom was on fire and that he was going to get some water in an attempt to extinguish the fire.
