PORTLAND — Nick Crutchfield completed a dozen passes for 255 yards and split end Alex Miele caught eight of them for almost 200 while leading Dirigo of Dixfield to its first state football championship.

The Dirigo Cougars took a one-point lead with 2½ minutes left in the first half and never hit the brake en route to a 37-20 victory over Foxcroft Academy in a battle of unbeatens for the Class C gold football at Fizpatrick Stadium on an unseasonably balmy Saturday afternoon.

The 11-1 Ponies could never find an answer for the Crutchfield-to-Miele combination and placekicker Eric Bolduc led a big special teams effort as the Cougars finished 12-0.

Foxcroft quarterback Ryan Stroud completed 11 passes for 158 yards and running back Ian Champeon rushed for a game-high 80 yards on 15 carries, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with the Cougars.

The Ponies scored touchdowns on their first three possessions, but were shut out for the next 33½ minutes.
