BANGOR, Maine — Big Lots, a Fortune 500 company with more than 1,500 stores in 47 states, opened its seventh location in Maine on Friday at the Bangor Parkade Shopping Center on Stillwater Avenue.

The Columbus, Ohio-based discount retailer officially opened at the former Linens ’n Things, which closed earlier this year after its parent company went bankrupt.

The new store, featuring deeply discounted name-brand merchandise, is expected to employ dozens in the coming months and opens just ahead of the busy holiday shopping season.

Big Lots executives and local officials appeared Friday at a ribbon-cutting during which the company’s district manager presented a donation of $2,500 to the Fruit Street Elementary School.

“Supporting the communities that support our stores is a big part of who we are,” said Rob Claxton, senior vice president of marketing for Big Lots. “We are delighted to be a new and active member of the neighborhood.”

Bangor Superintendent Betsy Webb accepted the check on behalf of the school.

According to Big Lots, the Bangor opening is the 45th location nationwide to open this year. While many other retailers have taken hits in a tough economy, Big Lots seems to be thriving.

In addition to its store in Bangor, Big Lots has stores in Auburn, Augusta, Biddeford, Brunswick, Portland and Windham.
