AUGUSTA, Maine — The month of August has been declared Maine Lobster Month by signed proclamation by Gov. John Baldacci.

“When people think of Maine, they almost instantly think of Maine Lobster,” Baldacci said in a press release from the Maine Lobster Promotion Council. “Maine Lobster is a worldwide favorite among seafood consumers and the industry is a strong contributor to the Maine economy. Maine Lobster Month is a time for all of us to recognize the lobster industry and its invaluable contributions to the state of Maine.”

Maine’s Lobster industry has been a national leader in its efforts for long-term conservation and commitment to the sustainability of Maine’s lobster fishery, according to the press release.

A variety of Maine Lobster Month activities will take place in August, including promotions by Maine businesses and restaurants, as well as Rockland’s Maine Lobster Festival which runs through Aug. 2.

August is the perfect month for lobsters because they are abundant this time of year. They can be baked, broiled, steamed, grilled, sauteed, stir-fried and boiled. The Maine Lobster Promotion Council Web site at www.lobsterfrommaine.com will highlight a different delicious and easy-to-prepare Maine lobster recipe for each of the 31 days in August.

“The month of August, proclaimed as Maine Lobster Month, will give us all the opportunity to show our support and appreciation of Maine’s Lobster Industry, which is one of the State’s oldest industries and maintains its lead as a primary contributor to the Maine economy,” Dane Somers, executive director of the Maine Lobster Promotion Council, said in the release. “You have 31 days to get crackin’!”
