A kitchen with classes

The newly opened Saltwater Farm in Lincolnville will begin offering cooking classes on July 28, days after a celebratory opening party at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 25, at the farm, located just off Route 1 in the village area of Lincolnville. The site features an old post-and-beam barn equipped with a brick oven, open hearth and smokers for meat and fish, among many other accoutrements for the well-equipped kitchen. The classes, which are held inside the barn, often have a distinctly Maine flavor, from regional game, meats and produce to pickling and preserving. At 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, for instance, a class on Maine chowders and a Penobscot Bay bouillabaisse will be held, and at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 30, a class on brick-oven pizza making will be offered. The farm’s special “Maine Event” will be held Aug. 12-17, with 20 guests treated to a five-day culinary tour of Maine. For a full schedule of classes and events, or to RSVP for the opening party, visit www.saltwaterfarm.com.

Restaurant renovated

The Bluenose Inn in Bar Harbor recently finished renovating its new eatery. The Looking Glass Restaurant, formerly known as the Rinehart, is a bright, spacious dining room, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Frenchman Bay. Located just a few hundred feet up the hill from the inn, the Looking Glass features the culinary talents of chef Arturo Montes — co-founder of Montes International Catering in Bangor — who has created a menu bearing his trademark internationally flavored dishes featuring Maine ingredients. The interiors and furniture are made of fine Maine hardwoods from Moosehead Furniture. The Looking Glass is open through November. For reservations call 288-3348 or visit www.barharborhotel.com.
