WALDOBORO, Maine — A motorcyclist died Thursday afternoon after hitting a minivan at a construction site on Route 1.

Francis Brewster, 71, of Waldoboro was southbound on Route 1 just north of the Route 235 intersection at 12:55 p.m. when he came across a line of traffic stopped for road construction, according to police.

“Mr. Brewster apparently didn’t see the vehicles stopped in traffic,” Police Chief Bill Labombarde said Thursday.

Brewster, who was wearing a helmet, rode his bike into the back of a 1996 Ford Windstar minivan driven by Patricia Boyington, 38, of Waldoboro, Labombarde said.

Traffic along Route 1 was stopped for 2½ hours in both directions while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Police have reconstructed the accident, and determined that speed was not a factor, the chief said.

Brewster was taken to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta by Waldoboro EMS, he said.

Waldoboro police, emergency medical service providers and firefighters were at the scene.
