By Diana Graettinger

MACHIAS, Maine — Danny Manchester and Glenn Davis walked away with the two seats on the Board of Selectmen that were up for grabs in the town’s municipal election Tuesday.

Seven men vied for the two seats. Manchester and Davis received 141 and 132 votes respectively, while incumbent Leslie Haynes came in third with 117 votes and Daniel Swain took 89 votes. Incumbent Stephen Smith trailed with 88 votes, followed by newcomers Stephen Berry Sr. with 41 votes and Allen Devericks with 23 votes.

More than 375 people out of more than 1,700 registered voters cast ballots.

While the selectmen race was heated, only one school committee candidate, incumbent Terry Sanborn, returned nomination papers for one of the panel’s two open seats. She received 236 votes.

Write-in candidate Katherine Cassidy won the second school committee seat with 93 votes. Incumbent Gerard NeCastro, who did not take out nomination papers, received 71 write-in votes. Cathy Chandler trailed with 23 write-in votes.

Voters also approved the town school budget by a vote of 244-127.
