Hard times forces Maine bookstore to close

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — A big drop in sales due to hard times is forcing a longtime Portland bookstore to close this summer.

Allan Schmid, owner of Books Etc. for 20 years, says sales dropped 25 percent last fall and have not recovered. He says that has made it harder to stock his shelves.

Schmid said book lovers are not willing to spend money on books they can get for free at libraries or cheaper at discount stores.

The New England Independent Booksellers Association says sales for all bookstores are down 10 percent.

Schmid says he will leave his Falmouth store open.
