LEWISTON, Maine — A Rumford attorney who initiated a referendum effort to build a casino in western Maine has been suspended from practicing law for six months and a day for violations of Maine Bar rules.

Maine Supreme Judicial Court Justice Andrew Mead ordered Seth Carey to demonstrate to the state Board of Overseers of the Bar that he’s undertaken further training in trial advocacy and professional ethics before he applies for reinstatement. Mead also ordered Carey to obtain the services of an attorney to mentor and monitor him for a year after he’s been reinstated.

The board investigated allegations of unethical behavior and incompetence brought by Maine attorneys and judges.

Carey spearheaded a campaign to locate a casino in Oxford County before a Las Vegas company took over from him. Maine voters rejected the proposal in November.
