Pingree named to Rules, Armed Services committees

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Freshman U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree has been assigned to seats on the House Rules and Armed Services committees.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she picked the 1st District Democrat for the Committee on Rules in part because of her record of leadership and bipartisanship in the Maine Senate.

Pingree becomes the first Mainer to serve on the Rules committee in more than 80 years. Only four members from the state have been on the panel, the most famous being Thomas Brackett Reed who went on to become speaker in the late 1800s.

Pingree said her seat on Armed Services is important because of its jurisdiction over issues affecting Bath Iron Works, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Saco Defense and scores of small businesses across the district.
