BANGOR, Maine — Fraser Papers Ltd. has sued a Michigan firm in U.S. District Court seeking payment for 1.8 million pounds of specialty paper manufactured at Fraser’s Madawaska facility and shipped to North Carolina between May 5 and June 2.

In the breach-of-contract lawsuit filed Monday, Fraser claims that Valassis Communications Inc. of Livonia, Mich., owes it more than $933,000 for the paper shipped to the firm’s Durham, N.C., facility. The Madawaska firm alleges that Valassis ignored its demands for payment in August and September.

Valassis is a direct mail and marketing firm, according to the lawsuit. The paper it ordered was to be used in retail inserts.

The lawsuit is asking a federal judge to order Valassis to pay the bill along with costs and prejudgment interest.

Valassis has 20 days to respond to the lawsuit after it is served with a copy of the complaint.

A trial date will be set after its answer has been filed in federal court in Bangor.
