PITTSFIELD – Anna G. Griffin, 95, died peacefully Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, surrounded by those who loved and cared for her. She was born Aug. 12, 1913, in Livermore Falls, the daughter of Frank and Mary (True) Derby. Anna graduated from Livermore Falls High School. She attended Farmington Normal School, received her Bachelor of Science in education from the University of Maine – Farmington, and received her master’s degree from Boston University. She married William F. Griffin in 1963. Anna was a teacher for 32 years and taught in Livermore, Livermore Falls, Farmington and Rumford. She also taught summer schools in Braintree, Mass., and Gloucester, Mass. Anna was very supportive of her community. She was a Girl Scout leader in Livermore Falls for 12 years, served on the Girl Scout Area Council and received the Girl Scout Thanks Badge. Anna was a member of many organizations; Pittsfield Garden Club, Pittsfield Tuesday Club, Universalist Church and Universalist Ladies Aid. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma since 1950 and a lifetime member of National Education Association. After retiring, she volunteered at the local school, reading to the children. She will be dearly missed by Sonya, who was treasured as a granddaughter by Anna. She is survived by her cousins, LaRoy Derby of Kittery and his sons, Peter Derby and his wife, Elizabeth, of Eliot and Jim Derby and his wife, Sue Nichols, of Arlington, Va.; Michael Derby of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; Charlotte Jones of Pittsfield and her children, Vicki Janousek of Sanford and Anthony Jones of Pittsfield; and Kay Erickson of Gardiner. She is also survived by many other extended family members; and her very special friends, Russell, Irene and Sonya Leighton of Newport, who took Anna in and cared for her during the last days of her life. She was predeceased by her husband, William. A receiving of friends will be held 1-2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, with a funeral service to begin 2 p.m. with the Rev. Scott Jones officiating. A committal service will be held in the spring at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Livermore Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Susan G.
