BAR HARBOR – Irene Elizabeth (Bowers) Sprague, 80, died March 26, 2004, at home. She was born Jan. 29, 1924, in Hartford, Conn., the daughter of Andrew N. and Mary C. (Horan) Bowers. Irene was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. She spent many years working at the Mount Desert island Hospital as a ward clerk. She also worked at Sawyer Jewelry Store. She was a member of St. Savior’s Episcopal Parish, Bar Harbor, the Senior Citizen Club at Malvern Belmont Estates and she also enjoyed playing bingo at the American Legion Post 207 in Trenton. Irene is survived by her son, Randell Sprague and wife, Jan; two daughters, Sandra Kearns and husband, James, and Cookie Merchant and husband, Albert, all of Bar Harbor; one sister, Mary Ann Hausman of New Britain, Conn., and Alice Newman of Connecticut; seven grandchildren, Kris, James and Robert Kearns, Jonathan Merchant, Amy, Erin and Brendan Sprague; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Randell C. Sprague Jr. Friends may visit with the family 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at the St. Savior’s Episcopal Church, Mount Desert St., Bar Harbor, where funeral services will follow at 5 p.m. Spring interment will be at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor. Due to Lent, the family suggest that those who desire may make memorial gifts in Irene’s memory in place of flowers to Hospice of Hancock County, 14 McKenzie Ave., Ellsworth.
