HOULTON – Gerald F. Gardner died April 1, 2006, at a local hospital after a brief illness. He was born Feb. 15, 1921, at Milltown, the son of Clyde and Lila (Holmes) Gardner and moved to Houlton at an early age. He was a graduate of Houlton High School and Becker Business College. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he worked as a public accountant in Bangor for three years. He then returned to Houlton where he opened his own accounting practice. He was a member of national and state professional accounting organizations. Gerald was the organizer and first president of the Houlton Toastmasters Club and was involved with many other civic organizations. He served six years on the Houlton Town Council and was chairman for two years. He was an active member of the Houlton United Methodist Church. Gerald is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara (Bell) Gardner; one daughter, Nancy Gardner Stone and her husband, Roger, of Houlton; two sons, David of Savannah, Ga. and Michael and his wife, Michelle, of Linneus; four grandchildren, Leslie, Ian, Keegan and Lindsay. Other special people in his life were his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, Carol Osborne and Phyllis Roberts Peabody of Houlton; and one brother, Holmes Gardner of Presque Isle. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Houlton United Methodist Church. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
