BANGOR – George Peter Limberis, husband of Mary Dunn Limberis for 59 years, passed away July 28, 2005, at home, surrounded by his family, whom he loved and cherished, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 27, 1921, in Bangor, to Peter J. and Angelliki (Limbaris) Limberis. He attended Bangor schools and graduated from the University of Maine in 1942. After attending midshipman school at Notre Dame University, he received his commission in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Thomas Jefferson, an attack troop transport ship during World War II, until his honorable discharge in 1946 at the rank of lieutenant commander. He saw action at the invasions of Sicily, Salerno and Normandy in the Atlantic as well as at Okinawa and other battle areas in the Pacific. A landing in Sicily and capture of several enemy troops by George was detailed in Samuel Morrison’s “Two Ocean War – a Short History of the United States Navy in the Second World War.” George also spoke frequently about having breakfast every morning with Ernest Hemingway on the trip from Ireland to Normandy Beach. After the war, George attended Boston University Law School graduating in 1951, returning to Bangor, where he practiced law for more than 40 years. He was an attorney agent for the Office of Price Stabilization, was appointed by Governor Edmund Muskie as judge of the Brewer Municipal Court in 1957 and in 1965 was appointed to the Industrial Accident Commission by Gov. John Reed. He was a member of numerous professional organizations and was a guest lecturer at national American Trial Lawyers Association conventions. George also served on a number of local civic organizations, including: post commander of the American Legion and was a lifetime member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church of Bangor, where he served as president of the Parish Council. George is survived by his loving wife, Mary Dunn Limberis of Bangor; his son, law partner and best friend, Christopher and his wife, Nancy, of Bangor; three granddaughters, Lisa Butler and her husband, Joel, of Holden, Sarah Cullen and her husband, Dave, of Brockton, Mass. and Kate Limberis of Bangor; three great-grandchildren, Brandon Mabry, Xavier Cullen and Mary Abigail Butler. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by all seven of his brothers and sisters, John, Charles, Ted, Anna Haliotis, Julia Limberis, Sylvia Dwyer and Sandra Barbalias. Relatives and friends may call 6-9 p.m. Sunday, at Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor, where a Trisagion service will be held at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 90 Sanford St., Bangor, with Fr. Adam Metropoulos, presbyter, officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of St. George Church.
