The “super oversize” load crawling across Maine will take longer than expected to reach the Maine coast.
The nearly 684,000-pound load, which departed Tuesday evening from Jay, was originally expected to reach Turner Island in South Portland on Wednesday night, according to the Maine State Police.
Now it’s not expected to reach its destination until next Tuesday.
That’s because the load didn’t reach Jumper Bridge in Turner in time, the state police said Wednesday.
The load is a heat recovery steam generator from the former Androscoggin Mill on Riley Road, according to the Sun Journal.
The load is 20 feet wide, more than 19 feet tall and 219 feet long, requiring it to take up most of the road as it slowly makes its way south.
It will resume the journey Wednesday night, traveling from Turner to Oxford. Then on Thursday night, it will travel to Gray, where it will remain until Sunday night before slouching toward Buxton. The convoy will complete its journey into South Portland Monday night into Tuesday morning.
Its ultimate destination, Turner Island in South Portland, is the location of a shipping company and gas terminal.
