That rain we’ve been getting moves out of the state later this morning, though we won’t see the sun poke out from the clouds until Wednesday.
Over the next three days, we’ll see temperatures climb into the 70s, giving us a break from the cooler fall weather.
Another round of showers comes later this week. It remains to be seen whether any of this recent rain lessens the drought gripping the state.
A new program in Belfast is helping homeless families find permanent housing
Small coastal Maine towns generally don’t have large homeless populations, but they also don’t have many available houses, and it’s well-known that scarcity has sent prices sky high.
In Belfast, a coalition of volunteers has started a transitional housing program aiming to take the pressure off people who could probably afford housing if they could get their feet under them.
Family Harbor House, located in the lower level of the Belfast United Methodist Church, is already hosting four families with 15 people altogether and is at capacity. More than 100 trained volunteers staff the house 24 hours a day, and donations cover operating costs.
Unlike a shelter, people stay for an extended period of time and can get budgeting help and other support services so they can save for permanent housing.
“The idea is to give people a break from all their money going into last resort housing like hotel rooms,” Director David Beseda said.
