Maine State Police are investigating a crash in Gray Friday evening that led to a backup on the Maine Turnpike that extended more than 10 miles.
The crash, which was reported at about 5 p.m., happened near mile marker 62, where Keith Tinker, 70, of Hudson, New Hampshire, was traveling north in a 2013 Buick Regal.
An unknown black SUV traveling at a high rate of speed changed lanes unsafely, cutting off Tinker’s vehicle, Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss said.
Tinker swerved to avoid a collision, which caused his vehicle to spin and hit the shoulder guardrail. The impact caused the guardrail to separate and puncture the driver’s side of the vehicle.
Tinker was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with non-life-threatening injuries. His daughter, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was evaluated for minor injuries.
The Maine Turnpike was reduced to one northbound lane for more than an hour, resulting in a traffic backup of more than 10 miles.
