U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers on Sunday arrested a Maine man in Philadelphia who was allegedly fleeing felony charges, including sex crimes and assaulting law enforcement, while he was allegedly trying to board a flight to Germany.
Matthew Thomas Cooley, 41, of Solon, was apprehended at Philadelphia International Airport. CBP officers found him at the departure gate with a one-way ticket to Frankfurt, Germany, according to the agency.
Cooley was previously charged with gross sexual assault, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and domestic violence stalking. He faces additional charges, including assault on an officer and refusing to submit to arrest, for allegedly pepper spraying officers who arrested him in April, according to CBP.
The federal agency turned Cooley over to the Tinicum Township, Pennsylvania, police department to initiate extradition to Maine.
