Human remains were found at the Casella Waste Systems facility in Lewiston on Tuesday.

A person at the 424 River Rd. facility called the Maine State Police at around 8:51 a.m. when the remains were found, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The state medical examiners office is working to identify the remains, and the Maine State Police have opened an investigation.

Correction: An earlier version of this story misidentified the location where the human remains were found. They were found at the Casella Waste Systems facility.
