A 9-year-old boy died from injuries suffered in an encounter with a tow truck in Belfast, according to the Belfast Police Department.

The boy was injured in a parking lot adjacent to High Street, officials said. Emergency personnel administered emergency aid to the boy. He was taken to the Waldo County General Hospital, where he passed away shortly after.

His name has not yet been released in order to give his family time to notify loved ones, Regional School Unit 71 Superintendent Mary Alice McLean said Monday evening. Support will be made available to classmates and others.

The Ames Elementary School in Searsmont will be open from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday to help students, parents and staff, she said. Parents will be provided with materials about how to help young people after the death of a classmate.

The school serves children from the towns of Belmont, Morrill and Searsmont.
