A Morrill man has been charged with murder in connection to the shooting death of a Belfast man outside a Swanville residence Friday morning.
Austin McDevitt, 22, was arrested late Friday morning and is being taken to the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
Police said McDevitt shot and killed Shane Sauer, 26, outside a cabin located behind a mobile home at 586 Oak Hill Road around 4:45 a.m. Friday.
A woman was at the residence at the time of the shooting, but she has not been charged. McDevitt, Sauer and the woman all knew each other, however none of them lived at the residence where the shooting took place, McCausland said.
Crime scene tape surrounded the wood-sided mobile home Friday as investigators remained on the scene. The home is located about a few hundred feet from the road, where a long line of state police and Waldo County Sheriff’s Office cruisers formed Friday morning.
The Maine State Police mobile crime lab was parked in the driveway as of midday Friday. Other vehicles and a couple of snow-covered campers were parked around the home. Several “no trespassing” signs were nailed to trees along the front of the property as well as a hand-painted sign that said “tires for sale.”
Immediate neighbors told reporters Friday that they did not know what happened at the residence. Police declined to say who called 911 to report the shooting and the location from which that call was made.
State police detectives are working with the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.
More information will likely be available when McDevitt makes his initial court appearance “early next week,” McCausland said.
An initial criminal background check on McDevitt showed no prior arrests. A Facebook page that appears to be McDevitt’s includes photos of him holding firearms.
