As family and friends remember a fallen fire captain in Berwick, investigators are looking for answers about the fire that claimed his life.

Investigators said they have determined that the fire started on the third floor rear porch Friday, and on Monday they used sophisticated technology at the scene to figure out exactly what happened.

On Friday, the Berwick apartment building burned, leaving 10 people homeless and claiming the life of Berwick fire Capt. Joel Barnes.

The state fire marshal’s office said investigators have interviewed dozens of witnesses.

“We take that, combine it with the forensics of what the scene tells us and we try to determine a cause. At this point, we haven’t come up with that we’re still analyzing the data that we have,” Sgt. Ken Grimes said.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives were also on scene using new computer technology to help pinpoint how and why the fire spread so fast.

“It gives us a 3D video rendering of that development, the movement of the people inside, helps us better understand what transpired and why someone was not able to exit a building,” Grimes said.

The final report from the ATF could take up to a month to complete, according to the fire marshal’s office.

The public services for Barnes will be held 11 a.m. Sunday at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.
