Woolwich firefighters carry a ladder toward a home on fire at 48 Greenleaf Road in Wesport Island on Wednesday.

A cat and a dog died and two pets are missing after a ranch-style house caught fire in Westport Island on Wednesday morning.

Westport Island Fire Chief Stacey Hutchison did not know the owner’s name. No one was in the house on Greenleaf Road when the fire started, he said.

The house was “heavily damaged,” Hutchison said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

“We were able to get here quite rapidly,” Hutchison said.

The Westport Island, Alna, Edgecomb, Wiscasset and Woolwich fire departments, as well as the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the fire.

The first call to the Lincoln County Communications Center about a possible structure fire was at 10:47 a.m.
