An Oakland man driving a pickup truck was killed Tuesday morning when a box truck crossed the Route 3 centerline in Liberty and collided with his pickup head-on.

William Chadwick, 55, was killed, Maine State Police said in a news release issued Tuesday afternoon. Dusan Dokic of Spanaway, Washington, who was driving the Freightliner box truck, was not injured.

“Although the crash took place during today’s snowstorm, troopers have reached no conclusions on why the crash took place and will continue to investigate why the larger truck crossed into the opposite lane,” said Stephen McCausland, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman.

The crash happened in front of Lake St. George State Park around 9:30 a.m., with both trucks coming to rest in the ditch on the lake side of Route 3. Traffic was rerouted around the crash site with assistance from the Liberty Fire Department, McCausland said.

The road was closed for three hours while the crash was investigated. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection also helped clean up fuel oil that spilled from the larger truck’s fuel tank.
