KENNEBUNK, Maine — A woman from New York died Wednesday night when she walked across the six lanes of traffic of the Maine Turnpike at the Kennebunk service plazas and was struck by several vehicles, according to Maine State Police.

Kelly Genito, 37, of Cairo, New York, was struck by at least three vehicles and died instantly in a passing lane on the northbound side about 10 p.m., according to a news release issued Wednesday by Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Witnesses reported she was talking on her cellphone while she attempted to cross the highway. She reportedly crossed the busy highway earlier in the evening.

Troopers said the woman was traveling with her husband, Marco Genito, 38, of Cairo, New York, a long-haul truck driver, who was sleeping in the cab of his tractor-trailer when the crash took place. The truck was parked at the service plaza.

The couple delivered items to Medway and Lewiston before pulling into the southbound plaza around 6 p.m., McCausland said. Troopers located the husband, who was unaware of the crash, by talking to motorists in the parking lot.

Marco Genito was summoned on a charge of violating a protection order filed against him by his wife in New York, McCausland said. He was allowed to return home to his and his wife’s three children early Thursday.

The pickup truck that struck and killed her was driven by Christopher Manos, 59, of Lincoln, who immediately called 911 to report the incident, McCausland said. Two other vehicles most likely ran over her body.
