BANGOR, Maine — A black bear managed to evade capture Saturday in a residential area of Bangor.

The bear was spotted hanging around in the Fairmount neighborhood of Bangor, Maine Warden Service Sgt. Alan Gillis said Saturday evening. The Bangor Police Department reported that shortly after 1 p.m., there were reports of a bear being seen in the vicinity of Hammond and Plaisted streets.

A biologist for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife attempted to tranquilize the visiting bruin but was unsuccessful, Gillis said. The bear then ran off and has not been located, he said.

The sergeant said that it was not unheard of for a bear to be in a built-up area of Bangor.

“It doesn’t happen every day but probably every year,” he said.

He recommended that residents not feed birds or other animals, keep trash covered and not leave food outside.
