HARPSWELL, Maine — A new facility on the East Coast is now open in Harpswell.
Marine Mammals of Maine said its new “short-term” seal triage center will allow them to care for stranded seals.
“Marine Mammals of Maine’s new capability will help increase the survival of sick and injured seals in Maine,” Mendy Garron, NOAA’s marine mammal stranding coordinator for the Greater Atlantic Region, said in a news release. “This kind of treatment fills a critical gap in our network. With seal pupping season just around the corner, the timing couldn’t be better.”
The rescue group sent out pictures of their first harbor seal pup, saved after it was found in Tenant’s Harbor.
The group told CBS 13 that after some tender loving care, the seal pup will head to Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut on Thursday morning and will remain there until he’s healthy enough to be released into the wild.
