Readers submit 84 designs that could be Portland’s new flag

Now that our Portland flag design contest is closed, here’s a look at the 80+ submissions we’ve received from potential designers. Several people submitted more than one design, and in all we have submissions from about 40 designers.

A panel of judges will narrow the entries down to the top finalists, and of those the public will vote on a winner. Click through the slideshow above to see the submissions.

You’ll see a lot of motifs repeated. There are sets of four, representing the four fires that destroyed wide swaths of Portland through its history. There are variations on the phoenix, featured on the city’s seal. And of course there are several nautically themed flags, from anchors to lobsters to many lighthouses (although there are no lighthouses in Portland, there are are three nearby).
