BANGOR, Maine — The mastermind behind the Bangor Police Department’s Facebook page has been honored for his writing about the daily humorous aspects of police work.
Sgt. Tim Cotton was recognized by the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop as Humor Writer of the Month for February 2016. Bombeck was a nationally syndicated humor columnist until her death in 1996. The workshop is overseen by the University of Dayton, her alma mater.
The Bangor Police Department’s page has more than 100,000 followers.
“If you are a humor writer or even think that you would like to be a humor writer, look into their programs. If you are a police officer, just go back to work. There is nothing to see here,” Cotton wrote Monday about the writers’ workshop at University of Dayton and his accolade.
According to a post on humorwriters.org, NPR calls the page “not your typical police blotter fodder.” A recent Bangor police Facebook post offering snowstorm tips to people in the mid-Atlantic states generated more than 97,000 likes and 73,000 shares.
