BANGOR, Maine — A vehicle fire that temporarily slowed traffic on the Interstate 395 bridge between Bangor and Brewer during the early Thursday evening commute did not result in injuries, a Maine State Police official said.

Maine State Police Lt. Rod Charette said he was driving on the bridge shortly after 4:30 p.m. when he spotted a burning Subaru owned by Kurt Cressey, 61, of Orrington.

“A Subaru stationwagon that had a good life — it had 196,000 miles — decided to flame out in a blaze of glory right on top of the 395 bridge,” Charette said.

Although Cressey made it out of his Subaru safely, the car had significant damage, Charette said.

The fire was extinguished by Bangor firefighters, Charette said. To prevent the accident site from getting slippery, fire crews cleared the roadway of foam, and salt was applied to the affected area, Charette said.
