AUGUSTA, Maine — The state’s attorney general’s office is warning the public of an Internal Revenue Service scam, according to a statement released Friday.

A number of Maine residents have recently reported they have been targets of scams, in which an individual pretending to be an IRS representative calls in attempt to collect a debt. Approximately 61 people called the attorney general’s office Thursday.

The public should be advised to never give out general information or send money. Scammers posing as IRS officials often threaten to arrest, deport or revoke the license of people they contact.

Scammers instruct callers to put money owed to the IRS on a debit card, which is something no government agency would instruct a person to do.

Anyone seeking more information is urged to call the Consumer Protection division of the attorney general’s office at 1-800-436-2131.
