BANGOR, Maine — Police are investigating a crash that happened Tuesday night on Broadway near Pushaw Road that left one man dead.

The head-on collision occurred at about 9 p.m., just before the Pushaw Road, according to Sgt. Tim Cotton, spokesman for the Bangor Police Department.

Alston Crandall, 80, of Dover-Foxcroft died from injuries suffered in the collision. He was traveling west when his white 2008 GMC pickup and a white 2010 Chrysler passenger van, driven by Matthew Gormely, 29, of Bradford, who was traveling east, collided, Cotton said.

Gormely suffered multiple broken bones and was listed as “incapacitated” in the initial crash report filed by Bangor police Officer Jordan Perry.

The condition of Gormely on Wednesday is unknown, Cotton said.

“I know he’s still in the hospital,” the sergeant said.

Investigators are still looking into what caused the collision.

“Unable to determine series of events leading up to crash incident,” Perry wrote in the report.

The Bangor police crash reconstruction team is leading the investigation with aid from detectives from the criminal investigation division.

Deputies from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department also aided Bangor police at the scene of the crash.
