DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — The former treasurer of the Greenville Firefighters Association pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of theft by unauthorized taking, according to the Piscataquis County district attorney’s office.
Bruce Reed, 54, of Greenville Junction was sentenced to two years in prison with all but 45 days suspended to be followed by two years of probation.
He began serving his sentence at the Piscataquis County Jail immediately after he appeared at the Piscataquis County Courthouse, District Attorney R. Christopher Almy said Wednesday.
He was indicted in June by the Piscataquis County grand jury on two counts of theft that took place over five years between March 2009 and March 2014. One count was related to the embezzlement of funds from the firefighters association, according to Almy. The other charge was related to Reed’s overbilling the town for firefighter training for himself and his time spent fighting fires.
Reed paid $11,000 in restitution to the organization and the town when he was sentenced, the prosecutor said. Information about how much restitution was paid to each entity was not available Wednesday morning.
Almy said he did not know how Reed spent the stolen money.
He faced up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
